My Brothers Golf R at e a curb trying to take an offramp. Now 101 is closed so no Aaa is available
Started understeering then the angle off the slope kept the car moving. Will update as more information is available.

Ooh shiit!
Now that’s why I practice a lot of e-brake turns in the snow...

Better the back then the front?

yep... that wheel is dead
least its just a factory spec wheel so the dealership probably has some lying around

In fairness, given sufficient ice and slope you can have an accident without any speed at all.

In this case dealers are 4 hours in any direction

aaah.....
america is to damn big
i could probably walk to 3 vw dealers in under an hour

Atleast had fun and then crashed...
But seriously tho, doing handbrake turns has exactly helped me twice on the road. Both the times, I'm certain I would have understeered into a curb had I not ebraked.

I always thought front first as you can steer the tire into the curb. May or may not have saved a wheel learning to snow drift in my first car...

Its awd so locking up the rear locks up the front

Im being a pendant: Yo u wont crash if you didn’t move. Even if you slid into something when you were stopped on a slope, you had to move to hit whatever you hit

Ouch. Ok that is done.
I was reading about flexible wheels just yesterday. Really needed considering the state of some of our roads these days, and for situations like this

Yeah, that occurred to me as I wrote it, but I couldn’t come up with a way of expressing that point that didn’t make my thought too belabored and lose the faint humor it originally possessed .

Not necessarily true but idk how Haldex works

Hitting the curb straight on is a good strategy I know I’ve used it. But my car has 15” wheels at the time so that helped too.
In a understeer situation if you can use throttle to introduce oversteer. you can also kick the rear out and power out of the turn. This works very well with an AWD car.
Who knows if that would have working in the situation but I practice inducing understreer to get a 4 wheel drift on a regular basis. You know for safety’s sake.

I probably would've done things different but hes been light on details since hes trying to limp the car.

It’s what he told me, so it’s how he thought that would’ve played out

Not sure, it is a rest area so it could’ve been people turning around

Time for some method rally wheels if you ask me

Dammit!
This is how grownups learn to hate winter. When you’re a kid, the worst that happens is you slam into a tree, and you go inside for hot chocolate while dad straightens the rails on your sled. When you’re an adult, the same weather costs you real money and fucks up your day.

You’ve probably got suspension damage. Ball joint, lower control arm, hubv and bearing.
Don’t know if the angle of the pic but wheel looks a good few inches back.
Also does “offramp” mean doing donuts in the rest area? Look pretty suspect.

That’s not how awd works. There’s differentials.
![]() 02/10/2019 at 12:23 |

Like I said, that’s how he thinks it works, hence no e braking

Bending can usually be fixed same day, but that one is done. I recommend craigslist or Ebay for a replacement if he has the time. Probably less than half what the dealer will want.

He hasn’t told me the actual details of the accident yet other then,”offramp”. Hes limped it somewhere so all the balljoints are intact. At the very least it will need, brake line, rim, lca, a nd fender. Potentially hub and CV aswell

Insurance claim. Bummer.
I work in a body shop and that’d be a really nice job to get. Good easy hours.

Well he might be right, that’s how it’s was in my Galant. But my BMW can lock up just the rear.
Every companies AWD system is different

I once sledded head-first into a building. That hurt.

He says “midrange” so I’m not sure what’s actually covered and theres not enough service to talk with insurance due to the snow storm still being very active.
I asked him and the Mark's behind his car are unrelated, it really was just the offramp

I can relate. My parents have a huge hill with the fence to the pasture at the bottom. I would slide head first and duck under the board into the field. One day I misjudged and slammed into the fence post instead.
It kinda explains some of my questionable life choices.
