Since The Actual RootWyrm is telling me blending the white diamond tri-coat paint on my ‘burb is going to be painful (see prior post on the fender bender), I’m soliciting oppo ideas for a vinyl wrap. Probably wouldn’t do it, but I don’t love the color in the first place (bought it used), and thought Oppo would have some good (and hopefully some horrible!) wrap ideas.
Use this picture and do your best / worst MS Paint mock up!

It’s a GM product, I doubt the bumper and quarter panel paint matched from the factory.

If you’re insured, why does it matter how hard it is to paint? Make your body shop deal with your insurance , and they can make Volvo guy’s insurance pay them?

... wait, don’t you have insurance?
Seriously. Make the insurance pay for it. The reason it’s a shitshow is because GM never has pre-painted parts available. Never . So the body shop has to go way past to blend it. It’s not a difficult blend, just an obnoxious one because of the color shifting. GM had to eat two very expensive resprays of the whole door on my lease because they don’t have a pre-painted door handle. Even though a pre-painted part would have been fine due to the angles.
Because the rear bumper fascia paint is fucked, that means they have to blend up to the tailgate and rear quarters vertically. Not a big deal. If there wasn’t scraping forward of the wheel, that would be it. But there is, so they have to go all the way up to the glass and forward to the door. If there WAS a pre-painted part, they’d only need to blend the edges and the d/s lower rear quarter.
Oh, and don’t just let whatever volume shop the insurer wants do the work. Make DAMN sure the body shop that has REAL EXPERIENCE with tri-coat candies and pearls. Otherwise you’ll end up with a bad blend at best, more often than not, no color-shift effect at all because they do stage 2-3 wrong.

I agree, this is just a fun thought exercise.
Ideas on how to vet out the repair shop to see if they are any good?

Fair point. Though I hand washed it myself a few times and never noticed any issues, even in full sun.

Honestly if I was gonna wrap it?
I wouldn’t full wrap it.
Basically one of those two classic two-tone schemes, retaining the tri-coat as the light color and probably a darker bronze/tan or brighter green.
That said, any good body shop should have a portfolio of their paint work. Even if they don’t do custom paint jobs necessarily, they should have recent photos of more difficult/complex work they’ve done. High quality photos (not crappy blurry junk) are really all you need unless they’ve got an actual same-color example on hand they’re willing to let you look over. If they won’t show you their work, assume there’s a reason .
Here’s an example of a good digital portfolio for a restoration/custom shop near me, where they show before/after and in-progress as well as completed work : https://www.facebook.com/pg/JnJAutomotive/photos/?ref=page_internal

don’t be deterred, it’s not rocket science blending pearls...be particular about where you take it. There are extremely talented painters out there, but more average ones.
