I was reminded of the cabriolet just this week when I spotted one in an old movie as I was flipping channels.

In college, a friend of mine had a GTI, about the same year as this one. That car was a hell of a lot of fun to drive in spite of the rubbery shifter.

Truthfully? I wouldn’t want it. They seemed cool enough back in the day, but I owned a 16-valve GLI for a minute and it was overall a disappointment.

Rubbery shifter, annoyingly close gear ratios and a short top end. The GLI had the engine, but a better set of gear ratios. But the 16v engine wasn’t very good. More badge than engine. (My opinions)

Nevertheless, I have very fond memories of Dad’s Rabbit. Probably more nostalgia than anything. I put many many miles on that car.

Yeah. I have some cringeworthy memories of my own from that car... But many fond ones as well.

Remember the time I dumped the clutch out of the parallel parking place in front of the house?

This was a late Mk1, like the one in your photo. I think that still had an 8 valve engine. There was a lot more to it than just badging - the base Rabbit was slow ( nevermind the diesel).

I do. I don’t think it was all that bad. You and I had begun getting along by that time.

I couldn’t say. I had a 16v Jetta and it was thoroughly underwhelming. And Rec
ar
ro seats that were supposed to be cool, but were a nuisance. No regrets, just some disappointment. It’e been a few minutes though...

Might depend on what you’re comparing it to and how old the car was. This GTI was fairly new, and my driving experience was all in either bigly American boats or crappy American economy cars. The GTI was like a go-kart compared to both, and was a hell of a lot more taut than the American econoboxes (Escort, Omni, etc.)

Omni: now there's a blast from my past. Bosch fuel injection on those...
