Today I was allowed to visit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The place was full of premies and little ones who had some very challenging medical issues. One little one had been there with them for a year. The dedication of the staff was strong enough that you could feel it. The love and care they took doing their work was clear to see. It was pretty amazing. They mentioned that they have a group of volunteer snugglers. Mom and dad can’t always be there, so there is a group of folks who come in and snuggle with the babies. Most are retired folks. What a great way to give back.
The leadership development program I help support at work did a fund raiser where they !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . They sold them to raise money and to fund donating a bunch more bears. They donated approx 100 bears and $20k to CHOA.

Our first child spent three hours or so in NICU right after she was born. It definitely puts things in perspective. I’m incredibly grateful to have healthy kids, and for a very reasonable medical system. So many others have a lot less. There was a video from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation a while back that almost made me tear up. They were performing infant autopsies to determine the cause of death to know how to better fight infant mortality. Knowing the that that was someone’s child wrapped up in plastic was heart wrenching.
For the difficulties we do have, we still have it pretty good. Sometimes it takes something like this to put it in perspective.

Thank you for sharing. The people who dedicate their lives to helping the helpless children like this truly are the best among us.

my wife gets very annoyed with people who get worked up over the gender of their impending baby. I hope its a boy, it needs to be a girls... shes like how about you just hope for a healthy baby.

Its funny, but I work in research for development of new NICU treatments. Its easy to loose the forrest in the trees s o to speak. You often forget why we do what we do and just think of it as a job. A little reminder is always nice to see

Thanks for what you do!
The same happens with us. We focus on the bits of the puzzle that we work on. It is good to remember that our job is to connect people. To move them safely from one part of the globe to another. It is also good to remember that we strap 350 people to a thin skinned metal tube that travels as 550 mph and cruises at 37000ft.

Our little guy was about 6 weeks pr emie and did NICU for a month (Lutheran General, Chicago). Staff was amazing. Fortunately he didn’t have any major problems, only needed to grow a little.
He’s been pretty darn healthy ever since and is just a crazy almost 2-year old now.
