Lexus LX (450/470)
1996 - 2007
110,000 produced (US)
At the LX’s debut in the mid 90s the SUV craze in its mere adolescence and the luxo-SUV market was just being birthed. There was little in the way of templates for Lexus to crib from and undercut. And, at launch, the only competitor with a higher MSRP was Land Rover’s Range Rover. If Lexus was going to compete, and win, in the space, the vehicle was going to have to be an outright winner.
Luckily for Lexus, they had one last card up their sleeve: the Toyota Land Cruiser. It’s easy to dismiss the LX as little more than a Land Cruiser in lipstick, and that characterization isn’t wrong, but the magic is in the details with the LX.
Look, we’re not likely to convince those on the ih8mud forums that the (and I quote) “gauche and gaudy” LX is a more compelling choice for the rest of us. But to us, the LX provides the same experience as a Land Cruiser in a slightly softer, more accessible pacakge. The LX came with adjustable height control (“AHC”), making ingress and egress more pleasant; the suspension tuning was approximately 15% softer than in a Land Cruiser; the cabin leather and interior touchpoints were all of a softer, higher quality, often described (a touch genetically) as “creamy” and “buttery” by auto scribes of the day. The LX was a bank vault to the Land Cruiser’s well-secured office building. Either one is going to last for hundreds of thousands of miles; 150k miles is merely a convenient halfway marker.

You can usually find them 2 to 3K cheaper then a land cruiser because
dealers wouldn’t
service the hydro
shock system. The rear springs were also more of a helper spring and would wear out in two years or so placing the pressures
way too high in the system.
They ride like crap once the air bladder ruptures. You can tear it all out or replace the hydro units for around $1k either way. OR you can adjust the pressures back into spec and its a decent ride, just not a cloud. Crank the front torsion bars and either replace the rear springs or add air bags. In my case i did air bags so i can be in the ideal range 99% of daily driving and then simply add more air for when its fully weighted for family road trips and it be just as smooth.
Avoid the Model Year
2000. it has a rare but fatal trans flaw that goes from fine to gone with no warning, ask how i know :(

O
hh yeah, the night vision is cool but almost impossible to get replacement windshields for. They also no longer have Toyota windshields for these. Replacing the windshield
is a job thats had corners cut 99% of the time and if not done right rusts BAD. look for factory windshields when searching.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

The hydraulic suspension really is wonderful, and in “comfort” setting, amazingly smooth and wallowy. And yes, the interior really does feel nicer with the soft touch materials, brightwork, wood, and leather everywhere. I don’t know that I’d ever buy a 100-series LC since the LX is a thing.
I’d love to have another one some day.

I t’ s the same with the 80 series except you can still get the factory glass (if you’re unc le money bag). The replacement procedure is SUPER critical to get right. My uncle had his done and shopped for someone who said they could follow the FSM procedure and he watched the guy do it to make sure it was right.

I passed up one of these in my search for what eventually became a GX470. It was a 2000, no rust, ~130k miles, converted to coil springs, and with a fresh timing belt. Dude wanted like 8600. Still kicking myself.

I’m in love with my 2006, I’m just waiting for the AHC to fail so I can OME swap it. The extra ride height will come in really handy for my once a year camping trip where I have to drive the truck on gravel instead of tarmac.

I bought the pink panty 80 because it was $2-3k cheaper than an LC. Now I just need to get it running again

Is 300k something to be wary of with these?
I’m looking for a cheap example of one to use for winter/scouting activities in the Midwest and found something that, other than the high mileage, won’t scare the wife away.

HammerheadFistpunch is your go to guy (he’s commented in this thread somewhere) for Land Cruiser questions, but I’ll take a stab and say that, inherently, no. They’re durable trucks which routinely do that much mileage and more.
Thing is, though, is they have to be taken care of to achieve that kind of longevity. They require some steady attention, and the parts costs can be expensive, but if you stay up to date on them they’ll last as long as you’re willing to keep on top of the maintenance.
The example you posted looks very nice given the mileage , and that’s a crazy low price, but my heartache there is that it’s being sold by a dealer. I’d really want to know the recent ownership history and service history of a car with that kind of mileage. With that knowledge you could probably do pretty well. Without it, that thing could be a ticking time bomb.
At the very least, find a local Land Cruiser specialist for a PPI. Even at $300 it would be money well spent.

Thats a tough one. my truck is a little over 300k now and is in mechanically good shape, but the little things are starting to add up: seats, trim, valves, window motors, etc. etc.
The mechanicals are good for many more miles but its not something my wife really tolerates well in terms of money in. Then again she was none to please that I bought a truck with 220k to start with.

I’m pretty sure my wife would react in the same way... she gets wary of anything over 100k.
