G80 in Camo. Links:

I’ve been reading blogs on BMWBlog, Bimmerpost, and elsewhere and decided to compile the information about the next BMW M3 and M4. Photos are from Car Scoops.

Production is predicted to begin in late 2020 with three tiers of M3: Pure , Base , and Competition . The engine will be the new S58 engine, which is the M version of the current B58 inline six. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Pure

“Pure” will have 444 horsepower and the drive train will offer real wheel drive with a manual transmission. The wheels will be staggered, with 18 inch front wheels and 19 inch rear wheels. Optional 19 inch front wheels and 20 inch rear wheels will be available. Note: This badging is not unprecedented as it is already available via !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Base

“Base” will have 475 horsepower with an xDrive drivetrain fitted to a ZF automatic transmission. Not the current Getrag DCT, but an automatic with a torque converter. The wheels will be staggered, with 18 inch front wheels and 19 inch rear wheels. Optional 19 inch front wheels and 20 inch rear wheels wheels will be available. Speculation is that the xDrive will be similar to the current M5, in which, it can be rear wheel drive if all the settings are in sport mode.

Competition

The “Competition” model will come out after the Pure and Base cars and will have 500 horsepower. The drivetrain combination is not clear yet. The wheels will be staggered, with 19 inch front wheels and 20 inch rear wheels.

Rear quad exhaust and wide fenders

Standard equipment for all models will include a M differential, adaptive suspension, specialized M seats, and a live dashboard (personally, I prefer black and orange).

What do you all think? I’m interested in a Pure, but in all likelihood I will buy a CPO F80 M3 or an M2 next because I’m too cheap to buy myself a new car.

I didn’t really like the steering in the F80 I test drove, I’ve heard they addressed this in the newer G30 3 series so I assume the M cars would be affected as well. I can’t afford a newer M3, so my opinion doesn’t really matter.

That’s the best kind of xDrive. Stay out of the way until called upon.

I think your opinion matters no matter what you drive! I’m in an E90 335. But these cars are so exiting.

I don’t care how good they drive, I’m not buying another BMW (I'm on my second now) until they add Android Auto and ditch their bullshit subscription charge for CarPlay that they presumably would also charge for Android Auto.

Interesting to go with a torque converter. Not that they’re not good, just that I would expect outrage from the enthusiasts.

Also, I know that BMW owners and enthusiasts talk about their cars by chassis codes, but this is now going to be a problem with “G80" and so on. Since there are no other names for the Genesis cars, because Gxx are their real names, I think BMW people should stop with the G nomenclature at the beginning. I guess that’s a hot take.  We’ll see how hot based on how much flak I catch for this.

The F80 I drove was much faster than my E90, but I liked the feedback in my E90 a lot more, you also can’t beat the sonorous shrill of the S65 in my E90.

If I had the money to get a newer M car I’d get an M2; however, that would require me to sell the E90 in order to afford it and that’s not something I’m prepared to do.

I love everything about the Pure. Hope it’s as good as I hope.

E90 M3 owner - zero interest in current M3/4, would love to have an M2 Comp, but need a real back seat.

Personally, I find CarPlay extremely intrusive. As long as I have Bluetooth audio & cruise control , I’m good on tech.

I agree on the transmission. I’m predicting in twenty years the market will drive up the prices on the Pure models and the ZF Version will be junk value like the E46 with a SMG.

They CHARGE for CarPlay? Wow. I have no doubt this was thought up by some exec who got fired from Porsche.

I live in the DC area where persistently crushing traffic means that even if I know where I'm going, traffic-aware navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze are extremely useful. All I want is the ability to put that on the car's built-in screen instead of using my phone in a dash mount. And I like Android phones more than iPhones.

I would keep that V8. That’s a phenomenal car.

Whenever I’ve dropped my E90 off at the dealer, I notice a huge difference in the steering weight between a loaner F30 my car. It’s really remarkable.

Hot take, DCTs suck, torque converter autos are superior in reliability and performance. A properly set up TC auto can shift as fast as a DCT. They just generally don’t because they’re set up for smoothness and ease of use.

Will may suck for BMW, but will be great for buyers because the ZF is a good transmission and will be just as good for the vast majority of buyers in the secondary market.

Starting on all MY2019 BMWs, to get CarPlay you first have to pay a couple grand for the navigation package which includes a 1 year “trial” of CarPlay, after which it’ s like $80/year to keep it turned on.

Meanwhile plenty of cheaper mainstream brands give you CarPlay and Android Auto standard, which means as long as you’re cool using that for navigation instead of the built-in maps, there’s no need to pay for navigation since at least the screen in the dash is standard along with CarPlay/AA.

Hell, even Mercedes does exactly that.

My e-Golfs come with the mobile duo for free, that’s why I’m flabbergasted BMW would charge for it. And it’s even dumber they bundle it with the Navigation unit. Now that I’ve used Android Auto I would never pay extra for an in system navigation. Android Auto is a revelation.

I love that the manual stays - it’s the only way I would ever buy an M car, personally. But it will be the ‘base’ that sells.

I find it odd, and kind of pointless, that the ‘Pure’ has less power than the other two. Unless the gearbox can’t handle >450 hp, WHY????

However, my dream M car (for real, and also because monies) is an M5 - - the E39.  I’ve driven an F82 M4 (manual) and it was great, but not that exciting to me.

Maybe over BMWs DCT, but what about Porsche’s PDK? That really would be a hot take.

Both great cars - I already own an E46, and although it’s a lowly 323cic, the chassis is brilliant.  It’s that S62 torque and noises that I dream of...

I had a ‘02 325i. I still love the way they look. I saw a clean 330 ZHP today at Bimmers R Us here in St. Louis & was thinking how perfectly designed the E46 is.

I currently have an M2 Competition. I’m just getting used to 405 hp, and I’m not sure I’m going to be continually wanting more as the years go on like the manufacturers. I get the idea of keeping the manual with a less hp engine as someone who want’s a manual clearly knows they won’t be as fast as someone with an auto these days. As my transportation needs grow and may have the desire for some more doors in the future, I’m glad this is sticking around while others leave the manual market. I guess I’m just worried what happens after this S58 when BMW doesn’t want to develop a new manual transmission for the added power? Hopefully I can stretch my current S55 into my old age.

I would prefer the competition with a manual. But if it’s DCT only then I suppose I’d have the manual base. Although at this point I’d probably rather have a manual LCI F80. Or just get an e39 M5 and wrench on it.

But to be honest I feel the 991.2 911 GTS with a manual calling my name very strongly.

Well, the 991.2 GTS is a whole other level above these cars! Nice choice though.

I don’t think any of the new M3s will have the DCT. I think it will either be a manual or a ZF automatic with a torque converter.

Sounds about right. BMW have a way with the ZF gearboxes. My gran coupe has a ZF 8-speed and it’s astonishing how it behaves. I drove a Jaguar with the same gearbox and it felt completely different. The Jag was slower and less aggressive. The BMW knows exactly what you want and gives it to you. The shifts are quick up and down in manual and automatic mode . Not DCT quick, but quick enough that you’re not annoyed at it.
