skip all of those... PSU is cheap no-name, case is cheap for a reason, a 770 is old, a G4900 is meh. what’s your budget and what’re you using this for?

I’m with Nibby, that’s... not going to be a winning combo. That, and I don’t trust used electronics. It’s pretty outdated tech.

I’m not looking to game at 4k, if that’s what you’re asking. Mostly I’m just doing this as a learning experience, hence the cheap and/or used parts. Only reason I’m even buying a new motherboard is they come with instructions. The 770 and G4900 will still make this the beefiest computer I’ve ever owned.
It’ll be used for occasional gaming, as well as image processing and light 3D modelling and rendering. If I can make this one work I might build something serious for myself and give this one to my mom for home use.

If you’re going old parts, go to newegg and buy one of their prepacked sets that are $300-400 it’ll be better than this combo. If you want the experience of putting it together, take it apart and put it back together again. Happy building!

hen buying PC parts, do NOT skimp on power supply and case... your fingers and rest of components will thank you later. anyways for budgets the ryzen 2200G is a solid choice... and better upgradability. Look at this, with all new components and should be quite nice for around $400 or so. If you’re not really gaming, iGPU would be more than decent... if not you can find decent cards for around $100 like a used RX480 4GB. Whipped this up for a rough idea

I did a build with all new parts for aroun 400$ after I got a hard drive and a couple other minor things I wanted.
This combo is solid, and totally upgradable and future proof, since AMD will be continuing the AM4 socket, only major hiccup was the motherboard had an old bios loaded to it, so if you can look for a motherboard that is B450
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=MSI+b450
I can run most games I want at normal settings with no issue or lag, and usually 60 or more FPS.

Or wait a month or two til the next Gen Ryzen comes out, and get the 2200G at a discount or go for the newer one. I built my Ryzen rig for less that 400$ total, including my hard drive and so far I’m pleased with it.

I’m in agreement with just about everyone here, don’t mess around with used parts, especially old ones for your first build. You want to have confidence things will work right, and that you can return if it doesn’t. If you do go this way, W atch out! T hat motherboard is not compatible with that processor (there are two different incompatible LGA1151 sockets (thanks Intel!), one that works with Kaby Lake and Sky Lake, and another that works with Coffee Lake. The board you have pictured is the former, while the Pentium G4900 is a Coffee Lake and needs something with a 300 series chipset.
Give me a few minutes and I’ll see what I can recommend in your budget...

Again, I’m fine with the processor and GPU I chose because they’re dirt cheap and still more powerful that what I’m used to. I haven’t had a desktop in almost ten years, I’ve been using laptops.

Ok, circling back, it looks like these parts together would go for around $225 , which is pretty low, but I don’t think it’s hopeless to hit something in that range. Let’s go through it:
Case : If you liked the one you picked out you may as well go with it. Cheaper cases often have louder fans, worse cable management, and more sharp edges to cut your hands, but it will work. This one also doesn’t have USB 3 on the front panel, which may be an annoyance. Additionally, it lacks 2.5" mounting points (I think) so if you want an SSD, you’ll need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. Still for $25 shipped it’s probably fine if you can live with those compromises (you probably need to double that before you started getting into “good” cases). Rosewill is Newegg’s house brand, so you can read reviews there: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147123&Description=FBM-01&cm_re=FBM-01-_-11-147-123-_-Product
Processor: It’s twice what you wanted to spend, but with your budget, the Ryzen 2200G is the answer. That will give you decent CPU performance, and ok graphics performance, avoiding the need to shove an ancient power hungry card in there (you can always install a better VGA card later). At this price point, it doesn’t make sense to do dedicated graphics, and the 2200G’s internal GPU will be better than cheaper integrated GPU options like the Pentium G5400 or Athlon 200GE. This also comes with a decent cooler, knocking that off your list.
Motherboard: I’d probably grab a B450 based mATX board here. There are a lot of choices all around $80. Since you’ll be using the board for video output, I’d make sure you are happy with the outputs available most have HDMI 2.0b as their primary output and throw in legacy DVI and VGA ports, which may not do above 1080p.
Power Supply: Get this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139201 If you put in a high-end graphics card, it will be too underpowered, but for $ 20 after rebate (ends 2/28) , it’s a really good deal, and I’d expect it to be fine even with something like a mid-range graphics card later.

I appreciate the input. The lack of USB 3.0 ports on the front don’t bother me. I very rarely use them. My only real requiremnts for a case are no lights, clear panels, or other misc eXtreemness. Due to the nature of the gaming industr y, only the cheapo cases actually look nice and simple and respectabl e.
I’m aware of the rave reviews that integrated Ryzen graphics have been getting, but I don’t have a ton of confidence in AMD, especially not after those hardware security issues were revealed. I’m familiar with In tel and trust their hardware.
I want discrete graphics because while I do not game often, I do want that option open to me.

Spring for a better video card. That 770 is Babylonian in video card years. It doesn’t have to b e 4 RTX Titans in SLI, but just about anything at $150 or so will be capable of playing games on a modern TV. Try to shoot for at least 4 GB of VRAM.

Actually, looking at that specific card makes me suspicious. The 770 never shipped with DDR3 RAM with any AIB. The pics claim it’s an ASUS, but that is NOT what an asus 770 looks like.
That card is a scam. Do not buy that card. You should consider staying away from anything cheaper than $100 on eBay, and beware chinese clone cards that don't at all approximate the performance of the real deal.

I’d second (er, third, or whatever) the direction Facw and Nibby are pointing you in. Ryzen 2200G and a decent B450 will do what you want now, and offer an upgrade path forward with options for more processor or a discrete gpu when the need or desire arises.
Power supplies are not an area to skimp on. Not only can cheap ones jeopardize aspects of performance or longevity of other components , they’ll cost you more to run. PSUs like that are as effective as impersonating a space heater inside your system as much as anything else (along with costing money to run in the form electricity from your meter converted into heat you got nothing for ). . I’d recommend something at least semi-modular to make the cable management easier, and with an 80 plus rating of some level.
Something like this will be more PSU than you need now, but it will be very efficient, semi-modular and will have lots of capacity in reserve for an upgrade path. This type of PSU would still be with you many builds down the road .

On the case front, I use the Fractal Design Mini C, a very nice modern (though no USB type C) mATX case, but with none of that flashiness:
Unfortunately, it costs three times as much as the Rosewill.
They do make s ome more basic mATX models, the Core 1000 and 1100, that are around $40 (maybe a bit more with shipping) that might be worth a look:
I’m not sure what you are talking about with security issues? The big problems the past year or two have been Spectre and Meltdown, but these speculative execution issues are considerably worse on Intel. AMD is immune to some (but not all) of them, and are getting a patch to improve performance of the workarounds in place that Intel will not be able to use due to architectural differences.
On the issue of graphics, the 770 is definitely still more powerful, so you can go that way, but it is a six year old card, which means its power draw consumption will be much higher (probably too high for the power supply I recommend), and it will be noisier. It’s not a horrible choice but I really don’t like buying into outdated graphics hardware. The processor graphics should play most games, though not necessarily at high detail or resolution (IIRC, the 2400G is around the level of a 1030, while the 2200G is a bit below that).

Up to you. There’s a big gap between the 9XX and 10XX cards due to the shift from the 28nm process to the 14/16nm process, but unfortunately there’s also a pretty big gap in price, so from a performance/dollar standpoint, the older cards are pretty solid.

I just built using the b450m mortar motherboard. Very very happy with it. I agree with the ryzen onboard video cpu for now, but strongly suggest waiting for the ryzen2 series to be on sale and then grab a 3xxxg ryzen chip as theyll be sold right when you just built this thing. But if you cant wait, a 2200g is great and clocks up quite well.

Hmm, missed that one, though it sounds like it was overhyped a decent amount, especially for home users given that the exploit requires admin access (thought it’s worrying that AMD said they were testing a patch in early May, and seems to have gone silent since then).

Well, it was late and I was getting tripped up by what the hell kind of power supply would fit in the case I was looking at. But now I figured that out and slapped something together that I dunno what your budget is but this came to a little under $600 before a Windows license.
Case:
Antec VSK3000E
- $32.89
PSU:
EVGA 450 BT
- $41.99
Mobo:
ASRock AB350M-HDV
- $54.99
CPU:
AMD Ryzen 3 1200
- $89.99
GPU:
PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 570
- $139.99
RAM:
GeIL Evo Spear AMD 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2666
- $84.99
SSD:
HP EX900 M.2 120GB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe
- $32.49
HD:
Hitachi Ultrastar 2TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
- $48.99
Wifi:
This generic AC1200 USB adapter
- $27.99
Total (for my zip code w/ tax & shipping) is $592.25.
Oh and if you want a faster AC1750 wifi adapter there’s this one for $55.44.

I’m using an Antec VSK-2000 case. Only $50, and all the reviews praise its tool free, sharp edge free design. Only complaints are about the cramped ODD fitment and lackluster cooling intake. I plan to fix both of those by foregoing an ODD and replacing the blank plate with a mesh grille.
The 1030 gtx drops my power requirement by 150W.

OK, so I found I still had this tab open, and decided I wanted to go back and try to figure out what that card was, because as you say, it’s definitely not a 770. So I’ve spend far too long looking at this.
I failed.
Everything about it screams mid-range card, single six-pin power connector, board size, only two digital outputs, only a single SLI connector, no heatpipes, etc. I’m pretty sure the “09 14" on the board means something like “2009, week 14" rather than September 2014. The patents are video encryption patents owned by Rovi, and seem pretty boilerplate. The fans look very similar to the Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo P ro:
But with a smaller gap in the middle. And obviously the cooler underneath is much less substantial. The Sparkle Calibre card above is mildly interesting in that it has an upper guard running around the fan like the “770", which I haven’t seen on any retail Twin Turbo Pros. No idea if the “770"’s cooler is a lower-end Arctic cooling model, or just a knockoff.
My best guess is that we are looking at here is a GeForce GTS 250 (a slightly updated version of the 8800 GT/GTS, 9800 GT, and GTS 150) , though I haven’t found one that matches this PDB layout exactly. The timing, rough layout (display outputs, single SLI connector (set in from the ports , as opposed to right next to them as on modern single SLI connector cards), PCI-E connector location, and such. The 230/240 use the same chip, but generally omit the SLI and PCI-E connectors, so I think this is most likely to be a 250. Could be some other card from around the same era, but it looks like newer GeForces in this range would probably ditch the VGA connector and come with two DVI instead in future generations, and would probably need more cooling than this guy has.
