in short, someone’s shitty remote start stopped all fancy cars in it’s vicinity from working.

That is kind of hilarious. When I had my Yukon I’d have problems locking and unlocking it from the fob after I’d been driving. For a long time I thought it was a problem with the car.
Nope!
One day I realized it only happens when I was using my super-China FM transmitter. We whipped out the ‘ol spectrum analyser (because everyone has one of those... right?) and sure enough! Though the transmitter was operating on a much higher frequency, it was so shitty it was raising the ambient noise floor enough to swamp out the fob’s signal. Crazy town.

I could really use a spectrum analyser, or trans mit sniffer.

If you have a laptop with an available USB 2 port, you’re us$80 away from having an rf spectrum analyser:

you’d need to unlock the column, but I’m pretty sure you can still hotwire an accent. My sister’s accent drove off by itself a couple times before succumbing to theft damage. (they broke in through the sunroof and destroyed the roofskin, but didn’t need keys to make off with it.)

We actually bought a car back for something similar. It would seemingly go completely dead after sitting overnight in client’s parking garage. Happened multiple times. But it never happened anywhere else, even leaving sit locked in our shop for a month it always worked perfectly. Oh well.

“a remote car starter”
“ faulty consumer electronic equipment stuck in transmit mode”
Aftermarket?

Not to be an old man about it, but it’s a symptom of a bunch of shit you don’t need to get down the road.

I’ve installed like 3, I’ve removed nearly 100. I’m jaded, but my gut response to “remote start-fluenza-itis” Is “shut up you fucking baby” or just don’t have teenagers do electrical work. Why so bitter? I’ve been asked more than once how a drunkalyser-blow-box “will affect my phoning onstar to start my escalade” not exclusivley escalades, but you get the idea. My answer was always “it will affect it in no way if you blow in the booze box first” but what I really meant was “shut up you fucking baby” I’m ornery about remote starts.

You’re not wrong. There may have been a bit of affluenza at play here too.

That stuff is way outside my wheelhouse. I can follow directions and avoid botching up an install , but I don’t know anything about actual frequencies and interference. It’s magic.
I would tend to trust OE system more than aftermarket stuff, but yeah there are some really crappy installation practices out there. Is it even possible for installer error to cause this though ? I’ve n ever heard of this sort of equipment having this large of an effect.

In my experience, they work for a few years then start being weird. much faster if scotchlocks are involved.

They are verboten, sometimes I remove/replace them with a soldered T-splice, just so I don’t have to deal with people whining about remote starts that are not my problem, a year after I last touched their vehicle. I’ve had blow-box customers try to convince me that the blowbox I removed a year ago caused their heated seat to stop functioning. (it was due to generall fatness and the quality of Ram seats. )

Yeah, I think those were the last ones to not have a chip key!

it was a good car, before all the break-ins/theft.
