My Soul has a KBB of around $5 -6k, which is a bit higher than I expected. I think I owe significantly   less than that on it still, but I’ll have to double check. But anyway, my credit is good. I don’t need a spacious car since I haven’t been a courier for over a year. A Nissan Figaro, Nissan Pao, or Toyota Sera can be had with less miles than the Kia for under $ 10k. See where I’m going with this?

Now, you’ll notice that there’s a big difference between $5,000 and “ under $10,000.” That’s the only thing holding me back. I need to be responsible, damn it.

Keep the Soul.

Plus, I thought you were in the States.  Your suggestions aren't in this market.

OIC, you want an inexpensive import.  Then go with the Sera!

Selling your soul is a pretty bad idea.

My take: keep the Soul unless it’s not fitting your needs or is making you unhappy. My reasons are 1) that there are  always extra fees involved with buying and registering a new car and that eats at your leeway, 2) you have to sell privately to even get close to book on the soul and that means dealing with buyers, 3) your time is worth a lot and this will suck time and effort.

Pay off the Kia and you’ll be in even better financial shape to buy those later as a toy or a change in DD.

Incoming boring take: in the context of this scenario, financial responsibility today means more spending power tomorrow!

(don't sell the Soul)

No, I'm pretty sure the only thing I'm jealous of is still the twin-turbo V8

I’ve been doing the depreciation math on my Mazda3 as well.  I owe just a touch over 7k on it though.  I keep reading that toyota will be selling the KODO Mazda 2 hatch with their branding as the new Yaris hatch for 2020 ( a la Yaris IA sedan).  If that happens, I’m probably going to hold onto the 3 until those start hitting the sales floor, then look at picking one up during year end sales season.  OR  maybe I should wait a few years until they are under 10k... I SHOULD be good, but I really don’t like to be.

If the soul has been a good car, keep it and save for something unique like a Pao or RHD Mini, MG TC etc... .

Ok, jokes aside, I agree with chariot and the space crab. I would add that it’s   always possible that your situation will change again, and those cars might not suit your needs for long - but the Soul is pretty versatile.

Financially, you’re better off paying down the Soul - but I certainly get that cars aren’t entirely a rational decision.

I’ll have the unpopular opinion and say do it. If you can swing it without hurting your financial situation, I’d rock one of those unique rides.

Cars already aren’t a rational decision, so why be stuck in something you don’t want when you have the means to get something you do want? :)

You probably want to investigate what’s involved in financing and insuring an old JDM car before you proceed as if it’s any other random car sold in the US. Plus, sure, these are early 90s Japanese cars with good reputations for build quality and reliability, but any car that’s 25 years old is going to need attention.

I’d just hold onto the Soul, it should continue to be a solid daily driver.
