Everything is organized for Portland! I think I’ve picked out our route down (it’s a little over 5 hours via I-5, but I want to take the scenic route down). We are going to be in town for the March 9th & 10th, heading back home on the 11th.

I was thinking we’d meet up at the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at 6:00pm on March 9th, should have enough seating for a group. Thanks to Potential Heap Owner for the recon info!

Still debating whether I want to take the CX-3 (comfort, room, mileage, less heat score) or the Fiesta...because fun.

I kinda want to bring the ST, so I would like to avoid driving around the city. How good/easy/affordable is transit? Or how walkable is the city?

Nice, that is an excellent location!

That street on the south side of the block? That’s where most of the light rail lines run; it’ll get you to downtown in a jiffy, or out a few stops to the Hollywood area which is pretty cool too. Walk a few blocks west to the Rose Quarter stop, and you can get N-bound lines to get you to the cool spots in N Portland.

Those streets on the east & west sides of the block? Those are the two largest N/S streets on the E ast side until you get out to 82nd. If you can’t get a convenient light rail train to where you wanna go, this probably this means you want to go south, so y ou’ll be able to get a bus down that way easily. Lots of good restaurants, bars, breweries, food carts are pretty much directly south of that hotel.

The main thing that’s not one short transit ride away from that hotel would be all the stuff between 30th & Cesar Chavez on the bigger east-west streets (like Belmont, Morrison, Hawthorne or Division); for all of those, you can take a bus/rail down MLK from the hotel, text to see how long until the next bus, and decide to wait or walk 10 minutes until you find something neat or pick up the bus along the way. All those streets are good for walking, and should have busses every 15 minutes until it gets close to midnight.

So, yeah, excellent spot. Portland has good transit and is very walkable, in no small part because it’s so dang small (if you’re used to BC, you may be shocked at just how small it is) . I’d be surprised if you wanted to drive to anywhere you’d likely be going in the city from there. Bring the ST!

As for cost & ease of transit, $2.50 gets you a 2.5 hour pass for bus & rail, $5 gets you an all-day one (also for both). You can buy them on your phone with the “TriMet Tickets” app; just show them to the driver as you walk in. Busses generally come every 15 minutes or so on the main lines, and every stop has a 4-digit ID you can text to the posted number and get a live time-until-next-bus (that’s based on the GPS position of that bus, not a schedule). For a city in the USA, we’ve got a pretty good transit system.

Hadn’t seen this thread until right now . Assuming you were talking about February, meaning this coming weekend? U nfortunately already have plans for the weekend.

We have a snowstorm coming our way...supposed to snow all day Saturday and then most of next week. It might not sound like much but this town crawls to a standstill with any snowfall, but also makes it more of an adventure to get out and about.

Ah good! Well that changes things. Definitely interested in any oppo activities that might be taking shape. Outside of Cars & Coffee and some scenic driving not much else I can think of (nothing wrong with either of those things, and good old food & beer) ...go-karting?

That’s a good question. My go-to answer used to be the Green Dragon, but Rogue — which had owned it for a while — closed it down and converted it into their East Side Pub a few years ago and I haven’t been to it since. It’s a big space with plenty of taps that’s close in and close to transit (but slightly away from the main drags so parking is hard but not impossible), but I’m not sure how the food and the vibe are since the switch (vibe was great, food was so-so).

So, that’s one possibility. The other one that comes to mind is White Owl Social Club. Not as many taps but still good options, and not quite as big, but should be able to handle 6-8 peeps (how many might be coming?). T he food is significantly better than Green Dragon’s was, and it’s got a nice ambiance, with a good outdoor area with warmers and a fire pit (plus, dog-friendly!). Location and parking sitch is pretty much the same as the Rogue pub.

Lastly, Base Camp Brewing has a huge, nice space, and lots of good beers, and the food is good, but the food comes from food carts parked outside so you have to order it out there which is slightly awkward (they’ll bring it inside to you). Also I’m not sure they have a full bar; I think they only serve their beer.

Hopefully one of those seems good to you. If not, lemme know, and why, and I can think a little harder on this tomorrow night.

Rogue East is lame compared to green dragon. Not bad, just a shadow of what it used to be. It’s nice enough and has plenty of space. Maybe I'm just sore that it changed

Yeah, I’m pretty bummed it changed too. I’ll probably have the same reaction as you. But it has many kinds of beer (and ciders), at least one thing that I can eat, and enough space that we can probably fit everyone at one table.

Though if a smaller group wants to hit up another bar, I’ll be lobbying hard for Roadside Attraction, which IMO is one of the most Portland bars there is.
