How did we survive such narrow (and occasionally cross ply) tyres?

Not all did....

Also, drum and single circuit brakes  (my mother discovered this and not i n a good way once), no airbags, crash resistance of wet cardboard, lockable brakes, drink driving and so on. And on.

My mum learned to drive in one of those. With baby me in a carry cradle   in the back seat.

A 2-door HB Vauxhall Viva with  manual transmission was my first car (mine was blue) , bought off my father. 1159 cc of raw power in that engine - not. I read an article a long time ago about how Vauxhall kept them under-tuned so they would be longer lasting, so definitely not a power-house. 4-wheel drum brakes, no heater... It was a different time!
