1955 ex-fisheries patrol boat, 6-71 detroit, all wood, sleeps 4.....$8200 CAD.

The main reason I’m not buying this, like an insane person, is because of running and moorage costs. It’s 42 feet long, so the cheapest moorage I can find is on the Sunshine Coast, for just over $3000/year. Anything closer to me is more like $6000/year. So I would need to take a ferry to use my boat, which is nuts. Even with the diesel, from what I’ve read about 6-71s in decent size boats , I think the best fuel economy I could manage would be 10 , maybe 9 gph. Cruising around 10 knots or so. That works out to about $55/hour to run, and you’re not covering much distance in that hour.

Oh well/thank god for my bank account.

This is what happens when I’m off work, I come close to making amazing/terrible decisions...

While super cool, boats are incredibly expensive. My roommate and I discussed buying a boat in university for fishing, and we very quickly decided even a cheap aluminium boat would be too expensive. That, and portaging a canoe from our house to the river was not smart.

You also need to factor in the fact that anything with a wood hull is going to be 4x the maintenance nightmare of any other boat.

That is a great looking boat. I’ve often been tempted by boats when I see them show up at auction due to unpaid moorage. You should but it, make it livable, and then rent it out on airbnb. Then you have a paid for boat whenever you want to use it.

Oh yeah that’s also definitely a factor. They need the hulls resealed like once ever 2 years or something insane like that

That would be cool but the distance away I’d have to moor it would make working on it and then maintaining it as an Airbnb not really feasible. If there was a marina closer to where I live that could work

And a lot of marinas won’t allow wooden boats to dock long term . The yard my Sparrow (‘59 Rhodes Bounty) is in demands a disposal escrow before hauling any wooden boats.

Annually, at least. Haul out, let it dry,  inspect planks for rot, replace as needed. Replace any rusted/loose fasteners, sand, caulk, seal, paint. Expect roughly a month of work, if you don’t have a day job.

I took a walk past a bunch of our local yacht dealers yesterday - the one that caught my eye was just a bit more expensive, (but twin Man 700 diesels!)

My parents had a boat for a few years; let’s just say ever since buying a lake cabin I haven’t heard them once mention the boat. The costs were pretty bad from what I gather.

Yeah... you don’t want to own a boat. Best to just rent a boat as-needed.

For the last few years, I’ve been renting a cottage that comes with a small 60-90HP fiberglass outboard boat that can take 6 passengers. And the fuel costs alone for that little boat are awful compared to any car I’ve owned.

Something like this boat must be 10X worse even with it being a diesel.

They don’t want to get stuck with people abandoning projects all over the yard. Or the liability of what happens when a neglectful owner doesn’t keep up on maintenance, and they wind up with a half submerged hulk blocking a slip.

I have a step niece and her husband who live on one. Boston Harbor. Year round. Apparently it’s cheaper than owning at least in Boston (?)

A high compression 8.1 liter,  gas engine inside a 26,000 pound RV with the aerodynamics of a brick would be cheaper to run than $55/hr.

I believe it. I think the math tends to work in high cost cities. There are headaches that go with it, too. They’re not that roomy, even on a bigger boat.

Yeah, it’s not a bad thing for a single person or couple with no kids, if you like the idea of having a really small house on water.  Theirs is somewhere around the size of this (50'-55' IIRC) but more modern.  Bought it in Florida and ‘sailed’ it up to Boston (it’s not a sailboat).

The real issue for me was the slip fees after the purchase, plus the  cost of insurance.

I don’t know much about boats but this post and comments was the most interesting read of the morning. I have certainly learned to stay away from wooden boats. Although, every time I watch SV Delos videos on Youtube I want to go blue water cruising. Below is an older episode where they sail to Namibia and visit an abandoned diamond mine.

I can see how that might work in high cost areas. Does Boston harbor freeze up? You couldn't do this in Chicago, because winter.

I would think that the combination of salt water and warm ocean currents would be enough to keep their marina open, but there are ways to keep it open regardless. There are a few spots around Chicago where boats stay on the water, and even a very small handful of people who live on them. Mostly on parts of the river that are kept open.
