Well you can scratch one of those off.

The government of the Netherlands no longer wishes to be known as Holland,

A common misnomer is Holland and the Netherlands are the same thing (throughout history the same has been said of England and Great Britain and the United Kingdom). Holland refers to two provinces, North Holland and South Holland. But the Netherlands is the name for all 12 provinces.

Kinja'd!!!

Well anyway. The Netherands no longer wishes to be know as Holland and from 2020 they will market themselves as the Ne therl ands

The Dutch authorities have decided to rebrand their country’s international image, with a switch from calling it ‘Holland’ to ‘The Netherlands’.

Ministries and sporting and cultural institutions, along with the country’s major cities, came up with a new strategy that aims to be “ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ”, according to the Adformatie marketing magazine.

The details will be published later in the year, but marketing professionals briefed on the change say the country will sell itself as “co-creating pioneering solutions to global challenges”.

The current brand name ‘Holland’, illustrated with an orange tulip, will change ahead of two key events next year - the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which will be hosted at the Dutch city of Rotterdam in May, the Dutch News site reports.

The country will switch to using ‘The Netherlands’ in its official branding, including on its international tourism site - which is called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for the time being. Orange will remain the Netherlands’ official colour - although it isn’t clear whether the tulip will survive, says Dutch News.

I’m surprised the Netherlands ever branded itself as Holland in marketing. Can’t recall ever seeing it.

PS: Nederland, rather than Der Nederlands.

Thanks for that tidbit of info. I appear to be more of an idiot than I thought because I then had to google the difference between Netherlands and Denmark. I assume there’s probably places in the US that Europeans confuse.

So if the people in Denmark are Danes and the Dutch, what are people in the Netherlands?

The people in the Netherlands are Dutch.

The people in the Hollands are Hollanders, while the people of the  Netherlands  are Dutch aka Nederlanders.

This seems as good a place as any to request as good a post as you can manage on the expected Hague riots on NYE/NYD.  Please, this is quite an interesting tradition being cancelled.

I too will use the terms interchangeably.

We even have a city of Nederland here in Colorado.

Understandable. I, for one, get kind of upset whenever anyone uses “South Dakota” or just “Dakota” when they’re trying to refer to the whole United States.

It’s not ignorant at all.

The common one I hear from Americans is the confusion between, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Great Britain, United Kingdom, the Commonwealth of nations, what countries Her Majesty is the queen of, which are republics, etc... it can be confusing if you weren't brought with it.

I guess I’m not that bad.  I know the answers to the common confusion you cite.  Brexit has kept the UK in the news so much over here.  Although that Ireland / Northern Ireland thing has a complicated history.
