Ten years ago I attended my first autox, I had no idea what it was or what to expect. My college roommate and I had recently graduated, had jobs, and bought our first cars. He bought an RX 8 and I had a Subaru WRX. I did my 1000 mile break-in during the trip down to Houston to meet up with him and check out this thing that a mutual friend of ours had suggested. Neither of us had heard of it and only knew it involved driving in a parking lot around some cones.

People there were helpful and before we drove they paired us up with competitors with similar cars to ours. I jumped in an STU prepped EVO IX liked the one for sale. I knew that the EVO was a competitor to the WRX/STi and that our cars were pretty similar. What I didn’t expect was how unprepared I was for the experience. The guy giving me a ride was a seasoned competitor and turned out to be one of the fastest at the event, but none of that mattered to me. I was just holding on, a mixture of terror, excitement, and epiphany (or at least copious amounts of adrenaline) rushed through me. All I could think of was: “my car is supposed to be as fast as this”. The thought and prospect both terrified and excited me.

I don’t think I remembered to breathe during the run, thankfully autox runs are typically under a minute long. My legs were literally shaking when I got out and stumbled towards my car. I’ve been autocrossing ever since, I’m one of the fast guys now and love giving rides.

My sister-in-law riding with me:

My mom left hand prints on the seat:

My poor little sister, this is when I found out that she doesn’t like to go fast in cars:

And here’s a first-timer who threatening to throw-up if I didn’t slow down (he started to enjoy it halfway through):

I don’t know if I can recommend this particular EVO, but whatever you drive, do yourself a favor and go do an autox.
