They confuse me. They call 2 cars, 3 if you really want to count the Voyager as separate model. Who buy’s them, & why not sell Pacifica under 1 name rather then 2. Seems like a waste of money for little return.

Kinja'd!!!

The Pacifica

Kinja'd!!!

The Voyager

On that, the Voyager (rides on the new platform) starts at the same price of Dodge Grand Caravan (the old platform). Why not slap some Dodge badges on the Voyager & kill that old platform. The avg buyer for the Grand Caravan will not care, as long as the badge says “Grand Caravan”. If the price is the same they would not care.

I’m happy the 300 still exsists, it’s V8 RWD & looks really good. I just can’t figure out the rest of Chrysler.

Chrysler has been run by bean-counters for a while now, don’t try and get into their brain, you’ll start shivering and rocking back &  forth , while mumbling nonsense.

they keep making the old dodge grand caravan on the old platform because all the tooling and development costs have been completely paid for by this point, so each van made is basically only at the cost of the actually materials used, meaning more profit for them.

The Voyager is supposed to finally replace the Grand Caravan sometime next year. They will overlap for a little while. Fleets are a big reason. Where I work (US Government facility with tons of Grand Caravans) it can take months to procure a vehicle from the initial request until purchase order is made. If the vehicle requested goes away during this time it can cause a reset to the whole thing.  That’s a part of the reason you’ll usually see  prior-generation full-size pickups linger on for a year or two whenever there is a platform change.

This sounds like the real answer to me. The other thing is I could see a large fleet buyer like that buying their own dealership worth of spare parts and preferring an older platform that they already have parts for and their mechanics are already up to speed on etc etc..

they’re just doing what the car companies did back in the old days. instead of trim levels, just use different names. Like the:

1957 Chevy 150:

1957 Chevy Two-Ten:

1957 Chevy Bel Air:

Why not slap some Dodge badges on the Voyager & kill that old platform.

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what they’re supposedly going to do in Canada. They never sold the original Chrysler Voyager here after the discontinuation of Plymouth, so they’re (according to the rumour mill) going to be using the Grand Caravan name here instead, but as a Chrysler. Who knows if it’ll work or not.

Of course, this is all as I said, rumours. But it does kinda make sense. As you said, especially in Canada, people don’t care what minivan they’re actually buying as long as it says Grand Caravan on the tailgate. There’s really no point to the other ones.

Thats exactly it. My dad's mechanic is still bitching about the Crown Victoria being dropped, he had a stockpile of parts and after 15 years of working on them constantly, had learned all the tricks to fix them fast and easy. A mixed fleet of Explorers, Chargers, and Tahoes is not as easy to manage, especially if they follow normal product lifecycles.

The Voyager presumably exists so they can advertise a low priced model to fleet buyers without undercutting the resale values of the Pacifica (such as they are, that is).

“Fleets are a big reason.”

Canada is another big reason... we love the Grand Caravan. #1 selling minivan here:

And #13 in overall sales:

“in Canada, people don’t care what minivan they’re actually buying as long as it says Grand Caravan on the tailgate.”

As a Canadian, I don’t believe that’s actually true. The Grand Caravan sells so well because it’s one of the best deals on the market here.

It’s sales were actually up in the US for 2018 over 2016 and 17 despite how old it is and ‘19 isn’t looking bad for sales here either - it’s hard to kill off a vehicle when it is still selling strong just because it’s old.  As long as it still meets safety regulations it’ll hang around.  The Dodge Journey is in a similar spot.  The R&D and tooling are long since paid for so they can undercut the competition on price and still make money.

and honestly, from a packaging and “hauling shit” perspective, it’s great.  it also gets good highway fuel economy. my dad picked up an off-lease ‘17 Grand Caravan GT for hauling R/C boat shit around, and it’s unequaled.  drop the seats into the floor and load up.  27-29 mpg highway steady cruise.

2 reasons IMO.

1. The Grand Caravan starts $2k cheaper than the “ Voyager” and IMO is a nicer plac e to spend time. The “Voyager” may be more modern, but it feels far cheaper inside. Not to mention the terrible trans that makes the 6-speed feel wonderful!

2. People stand by the Grand Caravan name, slapping that name on a cheapened Pacifica is a good way to lose customers.

I for one will never buy a new “Voyager”, it’s a joke.

Also, this POS isn’t a “Voyager”, the Voyager is a Caravan, both of which were SWB vans.
