It always feels weird to go to a dealer not being prepared to buy. In the other hand, how can I be prepared to buy if I’ve never been inside that specific model?

Also i am curious if I’ll fit and feel good inside a Miata, being 6"2/260lb.

UpDATE:

Saw 2 cars, a PHRT and a soft top.

PHRT was fine(ish). My head barely touched the roof. As it would be a second car, I wouldn’t complain in the few occasions where I’d ride with the top off. But PHRT is out of my eventual budget.

Soft top was disappointing, as one of the roof beams is right in my head. Either I’d slouch, or would have to change seats (and loose heating/airbag) or go for mods on seat rails etc, because even in the occasional ride with the top up, I’d be pissed.

So it seems that no MX-5 to me.

UPDATE 2:

After it sinking on for some hours, maybe i liked the car enough to go after a solution.

Lowering seat rails can cause problems with insurance and safety (probably)

Changing seats... need to understand how much comfort I'll sacrifice.

Might be a tight fit, but an NC is the place to start. I'm 5'11" and I technically fit in an NB, but went with a racing seat to actually be comfortable and safe.

The NC is the biggest of the Miata variants, at 6' and 260lbs I can technically fit in any of them but I wouldn’t be comfortable in any but the NC (lowering the seat is an option too, depending on your goals with the car it might happen organically).

I feel I’ll be disappointed. I fitted inside a 987 boxster, but wasn’t happy there. Then I’ll just give up on sports car and accept that  my life is inside larger cars

NC is best for taller folks.  It feels more constrained than the NA/NB but is physically larger.  NC’s are underrated and a great deal right now.

You’re not much bigger than me and I dailied one for three years, but i was pretty much at the limit, sitting up straight my head would touch the top and it was a chore getting in and out of. Just depends whether it’s worth it to you, also maybe a soft top would be better mine was prht, not sure if there’s much difference. I was ok with mine when I lived in Denver and had beautiful weather and amazing roads but once I moved back to Chicago, land of humidity and where curves  are illegal, I really hated it pretty quickly, the comfort compromises weren't worth it anymore without the fun times.

Please report back about your impressions. I’m in the market for an NC and I like them because they’re relatively big, but around here it’s impossible to find one for under 12K CAD (for early models, ones less than a decade old are much more)

Cool, hopefully I’ll be happy inside it, otherwise I’ll just give up on sports cars and  buy a Discovery 4 or s Jag XJ.

I'm really interested to hear how this goes for you.  I'm 1-2" taller and a similar weight class, but I couldn't safely drive use an ND or an older one that I had a chance to drive once..  (I think an NB)

You'll at least not be giving up style with those alternatives.

I gave an NC a drive or two, 6'2", 245LBs, I fit fine.

We have had two NC now, current is a 2009 Sport (6 speed auto, wife insists) and a 2008 Grand Sport that was M6. I put up with the auto since the flappy paddles on the sport aren’t so bad. We have also owned a few NA.

I’m 5'11 and for whatever rraaon, on this 2009 we have now, the top windshield bar is almost always in my field of vision. We had a few years gap between this and the 2008, and I didn’t feel like it was as bad. My wife is 5'4 so no issues there. Oddly enough the windshield bar never bothered me on NA. If this was my daily driver, id be trying to get the seat lower.

Just like the older Miatas, MAKE SURE the rear top drains are clear! This 2009 I didn’t put on a lift to inspect and I regret that. Someone had dropped pennies down the passenger drain and the car started rusting from the inside out. Totally clean and low mileage Florida car otherwise :(
