This surprisingly works better than I though it would... it still looks silly though.

Are they uncommon? How much open area do you get?

This is probably the best modern one I’ve seen, but you still can’t buy good taste with your pension, boomer.
Still better than the Camry Solaras, Mercury Milans and Grand Marquis, and other mid 2000s yawns that I usually see these on.

The biggest thing that bothers me about this one is the lack of the continuation of chrome at the trailing edge of the rear door.
The worst I’ve seen was a 4th gen Taurus with one. Unlike this picture, it was silver with a black top. It had the spoiler like this one, too.

At least it's black on black and not immediately noticeable.

The MKZ is fairly uncommon around here, especially the newer versions like this one with the Lincoln Continental style facelift. The Landau top is aftermarket and is quite rare these days. Most manufacturers stopped installing them from the factory in the late ‘80s through the mid ‘90s. You will generally find them on cars like Lincolns and Cadillacs, but show up on other cars. Usually, these cars are driven by retired folks, and sometimes real young drivers who inherited grandpa’s car.
As for how much open area you get? Just the glass sunroof. These tops are just textured vinyl that are applied to the factory metal roof. The only purpose they serve is for style ( which is questionable ), and to trap water and aid in developing rust.

The MKZ is actually quite nice to drive and has great visibilty for a modern car. It’s nimble and quick, with some interesting design. I especially like the trunk treatment. Not great on build quality though.
EDIT: they covered the window behind the rear doors with vinyl for some reason. That is a sin that they didn't outline it!

This generation MKZ and Continental seem to be Lincoln’s best efforts in years, at least in terms of sedans.

I’ve never seen a Landau top on a Solara before. Just the coupes and convertibles. I should totally add a landau top to mine

I would wager the owner of this is a bit older than you’re thinking. The whole reason the vinyl roof thing went out of fashion in the ‘80s and ‘90s was because boomers didn’t want them.

That looks like a pretty sloppy job - blocked off the windows in the c-pillar (what does that look like from the inside?) and broke the line of the chrome trim strip that runs all the way around the glasshouse.

Or just a really uncool boomer

I can’t vouch for this particular car, but I did find another one online. It looks like they blocked off the window. Granted it’s not much of a window in the first place, but it’s still not great.
The missing piece of chrome trim bothers me, too. I understand how it happened as the chrome follows the original greenhouse line. Still, how hard would it have been to add a piece of chrome trim for continuity sake?!

I just don’t understand anything about the decisions that lead to something like this.

Ah shit. When you said Landau I thought it was some legit factory option. Like this:
This is no landau. This is a vinyl covered roof. Tasteless, pointless trend localised to Americans, based on who knows what perceived value.

The Landau term gets thrown around a lot, but it really is just a vinyl roof. I kind of like them on some of the 70s and 80s stuff where appropriate, but it just looks wrong on anything newer.
