I knew it existed from a few vague references on Top Gear but I didn’t know it was still around.

Fifth gear’s been around longer than Top Gear, I’ve been watching both since 2003. Tiff is great and Jason Potato is always fun.

I love 5th Gear, including all the host, especially Vicki Butler-Henderson, aka VBH.

Interesting note, Vicki is married to Phil Churchward, who was series director at Top Gear and director on The Grand Tour.

Clarkson, Hammond and May TopGear has been around since 2002 and TopGear as a whole has been around since 1977.

Angela Rippon originally presented a car segment on a local TV channel, where it was seen and picked up by the BBC for a national slot.

In fact Fifth Gear was Clarkson’s idea. After the BBC decided to axe TopGear, around 1999-2000 , Clarkson, Wilson, Needell and Butler-Henderson were going to move to Channel 5 and present Fifth Gear. At the final hour the BBC changed their minds and tried to get them back. Clarkson was offered a big figure and a high portion of rights to the show.

So I looked into it and we’re both right and wrong. Fifth Gear did air first in April 2002 and was the actual successor to the original Top Gear (the 1977-2001 program), they couldn’t get the rights to the name. Clarkson relaunched a revamped Top Gear later the same year (October 2002).

Fifth Gear has been canceled a couple of times and just recently relaunched, now we’ve got Grand Tour, Top Gear, and Fifth Gear (I used to get Fifth Gear and Top Gear o ff of Final Gear, man those were the days). I even watched Top Gear Australia and Top Gear America, I only watched a clip of Top Gear Russia and never watched Top Gear South Korea or Top Gear China (some of them I thought were parodies, even after watching clips).

It’s been awhile since I thought any of them were very good though, the last season of Grand Tour and the last couple of seasons of Top Gear were getting hard to watch. Fifth Gear’s problems have always been that they are too consumer focused and spend too much time on boring cars in boring segments (it doesn’t help that many of the consumer cars they review aren’t offered in America).

I never paid any attention really to Fifth Gear.

Now I’ve stopped watching TopGear and didn’t even notice Grand Tour was back on until someone in the press started droning on about how it’s sexist, racist, yadda yadda yadda.
