Old question, new spin. What is the maximum height to length ratio that dis qualifies a wagon as a wagon?

Kinja'd!!!

Brought up by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

What is the smallest Height/Length ratio that is still a wagon? Also, there are obvious other ways to determine wagonness (based on a sedan, cargo to rear glass, etc). Im not going to debate if my method is best or even good.

“Wagons”

Outback .346 (take off the tall roof rails guess is .330)

allroad .316

TourX .296

E450 wagon/V90 - .299

XF sportbrake .302

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Tiguan .357

Highlander .352

Outback .346 (yeah, I did that)

Q8 .342

Macan GTS - .341

GLA AMG45 - .330

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Looks the Line is pretty solidly around .31-.32 though as you can see crossovers are encroaching on this numbers. Now hatchbacks...thats another matter.

Golf R - .339

Mazda 3 hatch - .323

Just some food for thought.

I don’t think it’s just height to length. I think body height is important. In my mind the Outback is a wagon whether it’s lifted or not (as a Legacy wagon if they still sold those ). The body proportions don’t change even though the car overall got higher.

well, like I said its not all length to height, but it is interesting to see the correlation.

oops

My first thought was “Maxima Wagon” when I first saw the title! Too bad because that would be awesome :p

I like this. My Caprice Classic wagon would be .281. Even lower without the roof rails.

I would consider the Outback to be a crossover these days.

The Cayenne and Macan both strike me as essentially wagons. Either that or really big hot hatches.

The outback is more wagon if you take ground clearance out of the equation.

I recently noticed how long and low cars like the CRV and RAV4 are getting, they seem much more wagon and less CUV than they used to.

According to the Golf R metric, they are firmly hot hatches.

Kinja'd!!!1

Agreed. It’s more about the height of the body to me, because the height of the car is influenced by the body and the suspension.

The Outback’s height number comes from the ground clearance that trounces many crossovers, and the superchunk roof rack that Subaru includes in the height measurement. Same with the Crosstrek vs the Impreza.

Impreza hatch:   57.3" high x 175.8 " long = .326

Crosstrek: 63.6" x 175.8" = .362

Legacy: 59.1" x 190.6 = .310

Outback: 66.1" x 191.3: .346

Legacy wagon, if it existed: 59.1 x 191.3 = .309

Raising the Legacy’s suspension puts its ratio firmly in the crossover category, but its body isn’t any taller.

Visually I’d define them based on the ratios of body height above and below the beltline in relation to length. Wagons, as I think we’d define them, have vertically shorter greenhouses. I’m pulling this out of thin air, but perhaps a wagon would have a greenhouse no more than 2/3 as tall as the height of the body side from rocker to beltline. Something like that, defined separately from ride height, because I think we can all agree that the XC70, Golf Alltrack,Buick CrossTour, etc are just lifted wagons. The Outback is walking a fine line nowadays, but I’d still put it in the wagon camp.

We love our AWD, small, Korean hatchback. (we bought a Hyundai Kona.) the seating position is a bit high vs a small hatchback, but  the plastic cladding coupled with its mini-SUV tire size (which actually happens to have a lot of good entry-performance tires available in it...) aren’t really fooling anyone.

It does ride like a light truck.   I was in a rental one and it was bouncing all over the place on what I knew from the Sienna and it's well broken in suspension as smooth roads..

I love it when one OPPO post inspires another. =)

The hatchback/wagon thing has to do with the “rise & run” of the hatch opening, and where the roof ends relative to the rear axle.

Her Niro is a solid little car. She initially told me she wanted AWD. She was coming from a 1st Gen Acura RDX. Recently her commute went from 7 miles R/T to 60 R/T. The Acura was getting 19 MPG on premium and was using a bit of oil. I sent her to drive a Subaru and she came back and said she didn’t want a wagon. So RAV4 hybrid was next. She drove one and liked it but it sold and there wasn’t another one nearby. She bought a red Niro hybrid and is getting 47 MPG on regular. It’s a nice little vehicle. I wouldn’t sell  it as an SUV, though.

I propose that wagons have a front end that is interchangeable with a coupe or sedan from the same manufacturer.

As far as I’m concerned, those are all wagons. (and this is coming from a guy who used to be super-irked that his Suburban’s proof of registration called it a “station wagon”) I’ve come around to believe that ultimately, there are always going to be variations in size and proportions in any vehicular class, leaving us with (in the case of wagons) a whole slew of big wagons, small wagons, tall wagons, long wagons, short wagons... The definition of a wagon needs to be more simple and fundamental. Like how coupes and sedans are told apart  simply by their number of doors.

Then rising beltlines kills off your wagons... The greenhouse difference in the last 20 years or so is pretty dramatic. Cars have tiny windows these days (except some crossovers and SUVs, curiously-enough).
