ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The sale of a popular North Carolina brewery is causing outrage, but not for reasons you might expect. New Belgium announced its intent to sell the business to Australia-based Lion Little World Beverages. The United Nations and Amnesty International say that Lion Little’s parent company Kirin financially supports the government of Myanmar.

I enjoy Fat Tire, but haven’t bought it in a long time since there are more local brews that are as good or better. However, a lot of people have recommended the brewery tour to me.
I was interested in doing that in the near future.
B
ut I try to make informed choices about where I spend my money and time, so I guess I’ll need to follow up to see if Kirin changes any practices due to the spotlight.

i’m quite surprised they lasted as long as they did as an employee owned company.

On a related note, don’t buy Jelly Belly. Their chairman was caught donating to an anti-t rans campaign.

I’m not clear what the limiting factor is that leads to a sale to a larger corporation when an employee-owned company grows. It would seem that sales records and simi lar business success would permit sufficient borrowing to continue growth, but maybe a sale is really needed for access to capital. Or maybe the employees get to a point where they want to cash in?

I can’t say that I’ve ever bought Jelly Belly products, mostly due to lack of opportunity and different candy weaknesses.

They’re more or less the only brand of jelly bean in my neck of the woods, and they’re kinda like tw izzlers in that not many people are into the m but if you are you’re REALLY into them .

It’s an ESOP all take over offers go to the share holders just like a regular corporation. People see big numbers especially after 20 years of working there a sale becomes a good idea.

I feel like if you looked into any corporation you’d find dirt. Especially in large umbrella corporations. As they tend to help any political campaign that could help them in some way regardless of its moral values. There’s also a 100% chance they have some one in upper management that has does something you find deplorable.
Same reason I generally don’t donate to larger charities, because there’s a good chance a large portion of your donations is going into the pockets of a few millionaires.

If not directly into the pockets of millionaires, it'll at least be going to cover the additional overhead costs of running a large organization.

That’s a reasonable point. My response to that is that I’m focused on the company (or charity) with which I do business, rather than individuals in the company . That said, i f I happen to know that an individual in the company is objectionable and will benefit from my business, and there is a practical alternative, I may pursue the alternative.
Also, I’m not checking on every company that I do business with either. I will try to stay aware and informed of larger issues. I f I know of something that I deem inappropriate, and there is an alternative supplier in the marketplace, then I am going to act accordingly.
I’m not going to abdicate what I view as my moral responsibility (and tene t of my faith) completely because bad actions are so pervasive . I’m going to try to live a life that matches as closely as possible with my beliefs .

From what I understand the bigger issue for breweries when scaling is distribution. Often they’ll pay larger breweries to piggyback on their trucks. At some point though you reach a plateau when you have to commit and get a fleet of your own.

True. A lthough New Belgium seemed to have a fleet (at least I’ve seen tractor trailers that are branded), I imagine that expanding into different markets might require enough teaming that it is easier to merge/sell.

I did their brewery tour in Fort Collins about 20 years ago. It was awesome, but I had no appreciation for craft beer at the time.
Honestly, I see New Belgium just like Sam Adams or most of Sierra Nevada — they’re more “entry level craft beer” that you share with your macro-drinking friends as a gateway. I don’t say that as a beer snob, I say it from a marketing/observation perspective. They’re not very interesting or experimental, but I always applauded their employee ownership and 100% sustainable energy policy.
Sounds like both of those are on the chopping block, and the domestic brewing industry takes yet another hit. At least for every brewery that gets bought out, we have like 20 more taking their place.

That is why I five my charity money to the Catholic Church. Ideology aside, they have very low overhead, and all of the money goes where they tell you it will go.

Something I’ve never understood is why we call it Myanmar. It was Burma forever until the government that no one seems to like or even consider legitimate told everyone to use this new name. So everyone just did.

I didn’t even realize New Belgium was a craft brewery. I always assumed they were owned by InBev on account of their average beer at inflated prices. Beer made for people who think Stella is a good Belgian beer.
If you’re worried about issues like genocide, environmental degradation, wanton destruction for the sake of profits, you really should buy anything from large Japanese-owned companies. At some point they’re all owned by a mega huge parent company that is usually involved in extremely sketchy shit.

Unrelated to social issues but I always get super sleepy after a fat tire or two. No other beer seems to do it.

I’ve gone on quite a few brewery tours and there is no other free tour better than Fat Tire’s in Asheville, period. The tour is even better than some paid ones. You get to see everything, the guides are super cool and knowledgeable, pours are full and truly unlimited.
It sucks they would be moving away from employee-owned. Learned about that on the tour and the benefits the employees got out of that were spectacular.

Yes. And North Carolina, as shown (in small print) on the bottom of the driver’s door on the van in the photo.

The NV200 (or Chevy Express City) is my least favorite van of all time. Ironically they wrapped it with the Fat Tire beer when the van’s tires are as skinny as a spare.

That’s all cool and interesting. I don’t know much about the region. Usually we call people what they ask to be called. I’m just not sure that the current government’s preference has anything to do with what the population wants.

Funny. I read the headline and assumed that the social outrage was over “North Carolina”... since here in California the “pressing social issue” is that The Independent Republic of Norte Baja (aka The State of California) has a travel ban, with civil and criminal penalties, on for any California associate traveling or spending money in North Carolina. It’s on the ‘banned list’ along with such implied hell-holes as Iowa and South Dakota . Really. You can’t make this up.
So, I’d agree with the general comment tone that “if you look long enough at any large organization you’ll likely find something to be outraged about”... because in a world of economic shortages the one they we are never short of is outrage.
