Recently acquired a new iPhone 11. My previous one (iPhone 6S) was running as fast as my Ruckus uphill. Got a decent deal, and even was quoted $100 to trade in the old device. They send you a special box to pack it in nice and cozy, provide labels and instructions how to do it. Drop it off at a FeDex and you’re set. So I did all that, removed the old phone out of its Otterbox case, removed the hardened screen protector, phone looked brand new. Factory reset the device to clear it, turned off location services as instructed. Slid it into the neat packaging, placed it in the box, sealed it up well, labeled it, dropped it off at the nearest Fedex. Sounds easy right?
*Narrator Voice* It wasn’t easy
I received this update on my trade in. Allegedly, the screen is all sorts of damaged: lines, flicker, pixel damage. Here’s where I draw speculation: in order to set up your new phone, you need both phones to be operable. So clearly, my screen was functioning before I sent it out. Unless I set up my new phone, then spiked it on the ground in celebration. Of course, there is no imagery to go along with it, and no clear way to refute the claims.
I reach out to their support chat. I get the same jist you get at any of these, “Sorry about your issue! We are looking into this. We will take care of it as soon as we can!”. You know what they did for me? They re-read my trade in status. “Per the status of your trade-in, the device display is not functioning properly.” Thanks! Didn’t know that!
I asked them if they still had the packaging it came in. If it was wet, smashes, or torn in any way, that had to be the root cause. Even if it was damaged in transit, does that fall on me? Apple? Fedex? Who knows. What’s stopping them from taking a hammer to every trade in they receive tell us that’s how it came? Apple fi nally sent a “request to out trade-in support to give a feedback and let them know about [my] request.” That process take two days. I know my chances are low to get that credit back, but I’m not going down without a little push back.
Then, conclusively, the guy messages me this:
Yeah, I’m a patient guy and all, and I understand this issue is not Vince’s fault, but don’t tell me to smile when I’m clearly not happy with your company’s service.
Doggo as promised. Not a fan of the cold or the snow.

in general always do a trade in for phones in person... that way shit like this does not happen. There’s no way to verify if it was damaged in transit or someone is just being a dick, etc.

I regularly do, but my carrier only offered $38 for the trade in and no phone discount. Buying it from A pple rendered me a discount on the cost of the phone PLUS the $100 trade in credit.

Does Apple even do this themselves or do they contr act it out?

Lame indeed. Did you do anything to document the condition before you sent it in? Either way, keep being persistent I guess.

Apple is on my shit list lately.
My 2013 trashcan (mac pro) has had major hardware replaced twice, and all my coworkers computers have had similar problems. My 2019 laptop shat the bed once taking with it a lot important data. So when my keyboard was being stupid and needed to be replaced I tried to back up my hard drive so it wouldn’t happen to me again and...it shat the bed trying to backup and I lost a lot of important data. They wont even try to work with you to recovery it. They wont let you have the hardware back to try and do it on your own.
This laptop is 6 months old.

Really didn’t think I needed to. But now I know to next time. Lesson learned.

Don’t get me wrong, their software is great and their machines work well when working but they are hardly a dominant force anymore, especially in hardware. The new macbook pro doesn’t have an SD card reader...because why?!

It seems like they do it themselves. The label was addressed to Apple’s receiving building in Indianapolis.

most modern macbooks have soldered SSDs and RAM so you’re SOL when it comes to replacing RAM/storage

Oddly enough my wife recently had almost the exact same scenario recently with Apple. She traded in her dad’s old iPhone 7 through Apple and was told after they received it that it was damaged/non-functional and wouldn’t be getting the trade in.
She attempted to contest it, but each supposed reassessment just parroted the same bs claim as the original statement.
My last four phones have been Apple products because I typically just take my wife’s old phone when she upgrades. When it comes time to swap again I’ll probably tell her to trade it in with our carrier, and I’ll switch to Android.

Hope they correct that for you. I’ve been happy with how I’ve been treated in the past - they usually err on making the customer happy, in my experience.

My 2014 MBP is still running strong.

Last spring I upgraded from a Galaxy 7 to a Galaxy 10. Did it at Best Buy. They gave me $25o toward the new phone, in person. I could have got $350 in bill credits over the next year if I mailed it. Hard pass, bird in hand and all.
I agree with Nibby on this one.

I usually take it to the carrier’s store where the trade in in quick and painless. But they were not offering as good of a deal as Apple’s site was.

When my wife traded hers in, they took her screen protector off to check the glass and then gave it back to her to keep for another week because the 11 was backordered, she was pissed and so scared she’d break it, she’s terrible with phones and we were both astounded it had survived that long. But that was T-Mobile and not apple.

What are the chances they actually are physically reinspecting the phone? Zilch. Each person probably just re-reviews the original ticket.

That was why she did it. The phone was significantly cheaper directly through Apple, and the supposed trade in was almost double.

I’m sure the supposedly defective phone had already been remanufactured and put up for sale before she even had a chance to contact them.

I hope so too. I know its only $100, but I am guaranteeing that phone was fully operable before it shipped out.
