My coworker is grabbing me a new battery as we speak. Will we attempt a battery change in -20, or boost it and go see my tow truck driver friend and steal his shop?

Honest question, what steps can be done to prevent this? Some sort of battery tender or warmer?

Yes to both. More likely to go the battery blanket route since having a charger outside in the elements is asking for some trouble. I’ll grab one and install it on my days off.

Is the battery DEAD dead, or just ‘dead enough that the starter won’t turn over’ dead?
Also, is this a manual? Because if so, and you can get it rolling...bump start? I spent an entire weekend gently bumpstarting my Accent to get where I needed to go back in the Spring when the starter died.
It might not have enough power to turn over the starter, but might to actually run things once it gets bumpstarted?

lol -20. I’ve only seen those temps on cold VT nights. Actual sprinting to the car, and actual shaking in the car for 10 minutes until I got heat...
I’m sure you’re more used to it and worse, but damn.

Oh no, it’s super dead.
It’s a manual, and we joked about finding a hill to get it started.
The nearest hill we could do it on is about 30 kilometres away.

I walked home in -35 last night. It’s a living. The worst I’ve seen is -48.

Don’t even need a hill, really. I bump started mine by pushing it at only around a few kph on a flat surface.

We could do that. Buuut we’re just going to wait for the new battery. I don’t need to get anywhere urgently.

Wowowowowow. I was on the peak to peak chair at Sugarbush (Its the slowest longest chairlift ever) o n a extremely windy -7 day in gear that was unfit for those sorts of conditions. I wanted to quit snowboarding after. That is the most physical pain I have ever felt from the elements.

I grew up skiing at Smuggler’s Notch. I remember occasionally thinking it was cold. I realize I was wrong.

It’s the reality when there’s no body of water to regulate temperature. I’ve seen 40 and -40 within six months of each other.

I’m surprised you don’t have a few spare batteries kept on tenders in the house. That’s what I would do.

That’s: a) absurd, and b) have you considered needing to change the battery in -40?

ehhh it’s not that crazy
and yeah, that would definitely suck ass, but I routinely wrench for hours when it’s in the teens down here. Never had to wrench in -40, though. But you seemed up to it in your post, so...

It’s only going to be -6 tomorrow, so that seems like a good option.

Lmao just thinking of the shaking. Nothing worse than when you hop in the car and its so cold you cant do anything but shake and drive to warm the car. The worst is then you always get stuck behind slow people so your engine warms up slow af

I have been using a battery tender for my outside car. It works amazingly well. It was like $45 or so. -20 ain’ t shit that’s like 12 in freedom units.

I got a NAPA brand tender. They are all pretty much the same. A couple of years ago I left home for a trip and got back to -14 F and my car started but it was not happy.
