Do You "Back Channel" Cars You Are Shopping?

I’m back on the 911 hunt. I found one, talked to the dealer, got the carfax and began to think about it. I even looked at the car and scheduled a PPI.

Kinja'd!!!

Not the actual car. The actual car was a PTS color in a slightly darker shade. This car is a wrap

As I read through the Carfax I recognized one of the shops where it was serviced. So I called the owner and asked about this particular car. He didn’t remember it so he threw it out to his techs. I heard one of the techs pipe up over the speaker phone... “ yea it needed a full re-build and he didn’t like our diagnosis or our price...stuck us for the diag fee too...”

Thank’s for saving me $350 on a PPI fellas! I sent the tech a DiBruno Bros box for the intel.

This is not the first time I have done this. Some shops won’t talk to me, others would but only after I showed up in person and offered cash if the info was useful. However I do it all the time now. A lot of times I have been able to get in contact with the last shop to touch the car and it has been super helpful. Things like “OMG super nice car”, or “great shape but will need front brakes right away”.

Just out of curiosity I called another shop where this particular 997C2S had been serviced...”The purple one!? Such a nice car! The owner however is a cheapskate asshole...” He did go on to say that the car was always serviced at the dealer on time up until recently.

Asshole I can deal with, that just means that there’s still plenty of blinker fluid. Cheapskate, on a 911 I cannot...NEXT. Honestly I would take a 911 that needs a rebuild, but I’d need to get it for less than 10k.

Anyway, do any of you guys do this?

Happy Monday. I spend the weekend at work moving 50 laptops from a local Active Directory to AzureAD...

I did, when there was a mileage discrepancy I discovered. Called the shops on the Carfax, had them confirm the mileage they had in their systems at each date, and found that somewhere it had an odometer with lower miles. Maybe legally, maybe not, but there was no info, so I passed.

And yeah, one of the shops was a little confused or hesitant to talk at first. A bit of"who are you in relation to this car?"

I do it for boats sometimes, but only because I know the shop owner well enough that its usually front channel level discussions.

I tried doing it when I bought my 335xi but it had only been serviced at BMW dealers and they didn’t want to share any private customer information. Even if they didn’t disclose the name they didn’t want to say anything. So I had to go off the records provided by the seller, and the PPI.

Annnnnd BMW is where I have had to grease the service manager, lol. Twice actually, I offered $50 and they both took. One guy told me the car was perfect smiled and took my money. The other guy looked after I offered the money but said there is nothing he could tell me that is worth $50 so we should both keep our noses clean. I liked that.

In my case I was in Wisconsin and these dealers were in California so I would’ve had to offer to bribe them by paypal or venmo lol.

Needs a rebuild for bore scoring?  I assume that’s something that you’ll have checked on any PPI?

I did when I bought the BMW, the shop owner didn't remember the car. I also check my shops records.

Yeap, I always go for the full DME on PPIs, I just didn’t even have to with this one . I didn’t hear why this one needed a rebuild, but I’m guessing that it is a similar situation to another I looked at, excessive cam deviation, oil looked like someone spilled glitter into it...

I bought the M3 over the phone sight unseen. To be fair, it did have almost a year on the factory warranty remainin g, so I figured if it was good cosmetically , it was fine.

Yea if I was dealing with a lower mileage/newer car I’d care less. I’m now looking toward the 997.2 cars because I have found so many shitty 997.1s the one mentioned included . I’m being extra careful because I’ve not yet owned a Porsche and know that a 997 will be at least as expensive as the E90 if I need someone else to turn a wrench on it.

This is also a soft search, if this car was a good one. I’d be selling the E46 for it. Otherwise I still have 7 months to go before I can tie one on.

Didn’t even occur to me until this post. Will do it if I ever buy a “real” car again.  (AKA over $5k)

I haven’t had much luck with shops talking to me over the phone, but I’ve been given entire service history printouts ( by a dealer!) in person. It varies.

I like to search the shit of the VIN, dealer, seller, etc before even running a Carfax. This morning I saw a Golf R in really nice condition.....although turns out it comes with free Lemon-aide!

Kinja'd!!!

Once I get the Carfax I’ll try and contact the servicing shops/ dealers. Some are helpful (Mercedes providing a full service history) other times they are not, like the mint condition GTI I found locally at a VW dealer. I was curious why it was not a CPO, but then I looked at the Carfax: i t had been back to the selling dealer something like ~33 times in two years. When they refused to give me detail on those visits, I could only assume the car had lingering unresolved issues from new, and was a dealer buy-back.

Happy searching.....

On the hunt again!? Aren’t we all - I have a Z3 non-M sunroof delete coupe I have been eyeing for too long. It’s a massive road trip away but I have gone back and forth with the owner short of setting up a PPI.

But yes, interested in the cars bill of health but more so the mentality of the owners and usage it had.
