I’ve been thinking about selling the racecar for the last year, and I finally listed it. There are just other things I do with my free time and money these days, and this car deserves to be played with. I’ll going racing again someday, but it will be with slick tires and wings in something like a Formula Mazda.
If any Oppos want to go racing, an Oppo discount would apply.

Interesting. What would it take to make it street legal again? Reason that I ask is that we’ve been talking about doing Targa Newfoundland. This could be an interesting way to do that.

Targa Newfoundland is epic! I have acquaintances from the Canadian rally scene who have done it several times and have always had a blast.
If you can manage it, do so!

Well, a state without an inspection system or emissions testing would go a long ways. There’s no catalytic converter. The intake is modified, which would be an issues in CARB caliber inspection. Also related to the exhaust, it is please pull me over and write me a ticket loud at anything more than idle. The brake pads also don’t particularly work until they get about 400 degrees into them. From a state inspection stand point, there technically isn’t much in the way DOT approved safety stuff like seat belts, despite what is there being far superior.
If the inspection/emission testing isn’t an issue, it would need the exhaust quieted down with either a supertrap added to the tailpipe, or some kind of resonator/flow through muffler like a glasspack welded into the exhaust system as supplement to the Flowmaster 40 series that’s there. The existing brakes would work for the targa at race speeds, but it would need streetable pads swapped in for transit or any driving at legal speeds where you’d probably never get the race brakes up to operating temperatures.
It might also need the suspension softened up for something like that. It would be very stiff. There are also no windows in either driver or passenger door, so hope for good weather. You could make a transit/towing window kind of setup out of Lexan if you wanted, but it would never be able to have windows that lower. There’s also no A/C, although the heater core and fan motor are still under the dash. I’m not sure if the turn signals work on the car anymore, but they could be made to work. No 3rd brake light anymore.

Does the US have any sort of “ restricte d use” registration for race/ rally cars?
Over here (NZ) anything with a cage in it is banned from everyday street use, and only lice ns able to be street driven to/from events or between stages, but within that constraint, it’s exempt from a bunch of the normal registration requirements. To convert a trackcar to a targa or rally car here you basically just need to refit the lights and handbrake, put some treaded tires and a number plate on it, and get a safety inspe ction done. W hich is ess entially restri cted to t he spanner-check stuff, o nc e they knock all the exemp te d bits off their checklist .

Used IT cars aren’t as expensive as many folks might think. Especially one like mine that isn’t built to the limit of the rules. If it had a fresh engine that was .40 over and balanced and blueprinted along with a standalone engine management system , and it had an LSD and 4.90 final drive in the gearbox I would ask more money for it. Ditto if it were a 240SX, 1st gen MR2 or an NA miata or 2nd gen CRX that tend to be the cars of choice for the class.

There isn’t anything quite like that here. Because I live in a state and county with emissions testing or inspections, I could technically renew the registration and put the plate back on it in NM. There wouldn’t be anything preventing me from getting it insured, too, at least as long as the insurance company didn’t see the car. That said, it would be a problem as soon as I would get pulled over in the car, and it wouldn’t take long. It attracts attention...

When I had a road-regist ered racecar I used to find the loud exhaust, low ri de, and graphics were a cop magnet, but o nc e I’d been pulled over and they saw it was an actual racecar not a boy-racer imitation, the conversa t ion would immediate ly get friendly. Cops on the whole approve of people who take it to the track, I’ve found.

The last time it drove on the street (unregistered), I got pulled over. It tends to be a different reaction here. That the cop pulled me over literally 500 feet from house is probably the only reason the car wasn’t towed and impounded and me given a stack of citations.

The “unregistered” part of that statement would lead to a very different conversation here, too. Would also be a different conversation if you weren’t demonstrably on the way to/from, or in, an event: you might get cut a bit of slack for shakedown of repairs, but you’d need the right cop.

I am both annoyed and glad that you're far from Minnesota. I have been wanting another track car and damn this would do that. However, you're a significant portion of the country away, and it's winter here.

A Targa car would be a perfect use for this. A s an improved touring class car, I would think it would be relitively easy to get the street registration so that it could be entered in the targa. A big plus is these cars were pre air bags so you do not have to re-istall them. Also, it appears to have the original gas tank which is a huge plus when converting to street.
Here’s reasons that this would be a relatively easy conversion ;
- The headlights and wipers should still be there, same for tail lights and turn signals
.
- Emissions controls appear to be intact, I bet the O2 sensor is still installed.
just make sure the check engine light is out.
- I can’t tell but I
bet the heater and HVAC controls are still functional.
- You would need to put some sort of muffler on it and I suggest re-route the exhaust to the original exit.
- Doors are not gutted, all you would need to do is get glass and regulators to get operable windows.
- Cage looks easy for adding a passenger seat and belts.
- Find a
car horn and hook it back up. You will probably have to add a button to the wheel.
-
I suspect an IT build suspension is about perfect for road rally so I think you are good there.
An interesting point is I have heard that North Dakota makes it super easy to register out of state cars as a auto tax haven. If all you want is plates, y ou might be able to form a corporation online and register it in North Dakota without inspection just to get plates and insurance.

Having done thousands of miles endur ance racing that generation of Civic/CRS’s, I can’t imagine a cheaper, more reliable way to get into racing. Also, this would be an excellent road rally car for something like the Targa.
Good luck with the sale!

Does that generation integra have a rear beam axle setup? Is that why the rear rate is so low? Wishbone cars are more like 700 pounds in the rear....
ITA97, now with more Jag @ opposite-lock.com

12/16/2019 at 12:18 | 0 |
Yes, this is a rear beam axle and torsion bars up front. The 325lbs was an almost too stiff spring selection. At most tracks I run it with the rear sway bar disconnected. There was only one generally lower speed, tighter track and autocrosses that I run with the rear sway bar connected.

Ok, so the strut and spring is at the hub. That explains it as on the double the rate compared to a wishbone it is 1/2 way down the arm...... I agree with the too stiff observation. A lot of people dial in too stiff back ends on FWD cars. It feels great but what most people don’t realize they could go in so much harder if the back end was more trustworthy.
I gave a set of 700 pound rears to a CRX ITA racer. He’s no slouch and he picked up a second a lap.......

Stability on the way in is exactly why I have the sway bar disconnected on most tracks. The rotation would be nice in places , but it comes at cost on how hard and how deep you can go in, especially on corners with high speed braking zones. Since that’s where all the passing happens under braking into those corners, I’d rather have the increased ability to go deeper on entry and out brake the guy I’m racing.
There’s a similar trade off on tire sizes between running 225/50(or 45 these days)/15 and 205/50/15 on the car . I ran both (often determined by what I could get ahold of cheaper at any given time). The 225's definitely had bit more grip at apex, but being limited to 7 inch wheel means those sidewalls are squished a bit and the associated cost of just a bit less feel and reaction (especially on turn in). It imagining it would probably be close to a wash on lap time, but for racing I preferred the more immediate set up and feedback of 205's when coming into turn one at Peublo on the rev limiter in 4th (or into fifth after the min. weight for to the car got lowered 180lbs) to out brake someone around a big, fast, banked top of 3rd gear 180 degree corner with a big, car ending, 18" drop off on the outside of corner exit.

Yep. early on the hot setup was 1000 pound plus springs in the rear of the ‘88 and later civic/crx’s. There were a ton of people that ran them cause that is what the fast guys ran. I came to the conclusion that maybe the fast guys ran them because they had a lot more car control than us mere mortals.....
