"Chariotoflove" (chariotoflove)

I’m running Safari with pop ups and video autoplay disabled, but the damned FP is still scrolling with seconds of delay. And it gets worse the longer I stay on a page. Reading an article is hardly worth it right now. Is it just me, or are the Kinja devs messing this up? Safari is telling me the page is using a lot of resources. What about you guys?

This happens intermittently to me.

Works good on Chrome with adblocker. I have more problems with Oppo not loading images or comments and having to refresh multiple times.

I’ve also been having the problem this week that I can’t log on to anywhere but Oppo. No idea if that’s connected to ongoing “development” or not.

The entire comment section is nearly unusable on Firefox, and it’s been that way for months.
They really need to get rid of some display ads, nuke the autoplay videos from orbit and fix the site so it works with all browsers. I can’t for the life of me understand why they’d limit their audience like this unless the purpose is to tank traffic for all the sites.

Oppo is the only Kinja site that is working without problems for me right now. Go figure. You’d think that in 2019 everyone would be coding for standards compliant browsers.

That’s me too. Okay, so it’s not just my setup then.

First thought is that they are working against themselves here. Even with all the autoplay turned off, it’s still unusable. And this week, I can’t even log on with my burner anywhere by Oppo.
Why all browsers aren’t standards compliant and all sites written for them in 2019 I can’t fathom.

It’s pretty bad. That and using the term “Holy Grail” like a verbal tic.

On chrome on my mac the drop down ads play every time I load a page....
On my Kindle I don’t even try...

At least seeing that phrase autoplays a Monty Python clip in my head so that I get a chuckle out of it anyway.

It sounds like they need to tighten up their code if different Firefox and Chrome users are having such different experiences on different devices.

They made a change that involves 3rd party tracking in the login system and my adblock is blocking their login.

Then again Edge is just a reskinned Internet explorer so that's kinda normal

And a pparently obscuring the comment section with a stupid click-me bar wasn’t enough; they had to start obscuring the main article as well:

It’s not even subtle anymore. I never thought they’d be this aggressive about turning visitors away. I’m gonna start visiting The Drive more often. Got any tips for navigating the site? I much prefer how Jalo pnik’s front page lists all posts chronologically, but The Drive appears t o have everything broken up into sections that have to be clicked on individually. Is there no “view all posts” button?

Win10/Chrome is working fine.
Well, fine being a relative term. I should say it’s been about as bad as I’ve grown accustomed to over the last year or so.
On my phone (Android 9/Chrome) , it has gotten noticeably worse. In fact, the default width of text boxes is wider than the screen real estate in portrait mode. Makes trying to type anything a pain in the ass.

We can’t have readers enjoying all that content. They’ll get spoiled.

I’ve had the same thing on both my iPhones in the last year too. I hadn’t heard of anyone else saying this. It makes editing and placing graphics almost unworkable.

What’s amusing is that everything parses fine in the Google News app. But o f course, you can’t comment from there, so it’s all moot.

I wish there was a feed of all posts on the site as
folks there for news
are frequently also into motorsports, reviews and military tech, but yeah. I don’t think there is a main feed at the moment, short of looking at their Twitter feed for what’s been posted recently.

I mean, this was Web Design 101 back when I had an Intro to HTML class in high school........in 2003. Always design for multiple browsers.

I don’t know about Edge, but Chrome, Firefox, and Safari are supposed to be coded to web standards so working for multiple browsers should be easier than back when each had proprietary code you had to accommodate.
