The right name on the wrong vehicle, its competitively priced. But also stepping on toes in Chevy’s lineup. I got the email of the pricing this morning:
Trailblazer L is bare bones but Chevy is trying to sell it as value as the standout standard features on it are mainly driver safety aids. Auto emergency braking, forward collision alert and front pedestrian braking are all standard on L.
LS builds on L by coming standard with fold flat passenger seat, 17" aluminum wheels and LED DRL’s. I will say its a good move that they went with 17" wheels. The new Hyundai Venue has shown that small wheels emphasize how small these crossovers are.
Trailblazer LT
LT builds on LS by coming with roof rails, fog lamps, heated seats and remote start.
Trailblazer Pose...I mean Activ
Activ is the off road wannabe. It comes with dual exhaust, two tone paint options, rugged sport terrain tires (whatever it means, its meaningless on this thing) and leatherette seating.
RS is the top of the Trailblazer line. Coming off as sporty, it comes with dual exhaust, two tone paint,18' wheels with black inserts, cloth/leatherette seats with red accents and a flat bottom (lol!) leather wrapped steering wheel.
The Trailblazer will be the cheapest way you can get into a Chevy crossover. With two small ass engines available, this thing should be fun to drive. Base engine is a 1.2 I3 with 137 horses paired to a CVT. Other trims get the option of a turbo 1.3 with 155 horses. AWD is available on the upper trims costing anywhere from $1500-2k, depending on trim.
Pricing on this however brings into question the existence of the Trax, the current small Sonic based crossover, and calls its value into question with it stepping on the base Equinox as well. Many might not pay attention to that though considering that for the price of a base Equinox you are getting features on the upper trims of the Trailblazer. But anyway, I’m still not sure who this is for. It goes on sale early in ‘20.

I’m sure they’ll sell a ton of them. I’m assuming the Trax will get discontinued as this seems way better in the same range.

Yea they will. To seniors. Automakers always pull stuff like this. Especially with crossovers. they make and design and put features in these things they think will appeal to Millennials and Gen Y, and then seniors buy em up. Just look at who was driving the last gen Scion Xb, or whos currently driving all the CH-R’s and Chevy Trax.

Anything now that sits tall and has big doors, easy to get in, will be a seniormobile.

That’s an especially irritating faux floating C-pillar. Sycophant copycat “designers”/”stylists”, make it stop!

If anything, they should make the Trax a rental model (the Captiva of the 2020’s) that would serve as a decent used car and focus on making the Trailblazer a good car for new sales.

This is a good idea. Because i remember the Captiva wasn’t a thing in the US. We got it as the 2nd gen Vue. And from what I saw, it sold pretty good on the used market. The Trax is terrible though. I don’ t know who in their right mind would willingly buy that. I feel like the plan is to kill the Trax and have this replace it. I hope that’ s the case.

I hope so, too. Keeping this and the Trax (New) would be stupid, unless dealers start selling Trax LT models for $15,000. That would make it a steal. Keyless access, CarPlay, and more on a little, brand new car. The fleet concept sounds better, if they somehow decide to keep producing it.
This seems like the Flex and the Explorer. Contrary to what everyone says, the Explorer was a much better car than the Flex (inside and out), and buyers didn’t want an ugly box that got 16 MPG and had few modern features. Ford realized this probably four years too late and finally killed the Flex.

This and the Encore GX are theoretically a step up from the Trax and regular Encore. It’s weird, but it’s not unique. Other brands with similar crowding on the small ends of their CUV lineups:
Audi - Q2* , Q3, Q5
BMW - X1, X2, X3, X4
Buick - Encore, Encore GX, Envision
Chevy - Trax, Trailblazer, Equinox
Hyundai - Venue, Kona, Tucson
Jeep - Renegade, Compass, Cherokee
Kia - Soul, Seltos, Sportage
Mazda - CX-3, CX-30, CX-4* , CX-5
Mercedes - GLA, GLB, GLC, GLC Coupe
Mitsubishi - Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Outlander
Nissan - Kicks, Rogue Sport, Rogue
VW - T-Cross* , T-Roc* , Tiguan* , Tiguan Allspace* /USA Tiguan
* - not in the USA

With them killing cars, it could work. The Trax could take the place of the Spark/Sonic for people wanting transportation with low payments.
I wish they would release specs though for this thing. It might make sense over the Trax in the way you described it like the Flex/Explorer, but its dimensions will most likely show how it doesn’ t make much more sense. This comes across to me as more of a vehicle foe developing markets rather than something for the US.

About half of that list has no business even existing.
Nissan was the first one that came to mind when lineup saturation comes to mind. I didn’t realize the Juke was dead either.

Actually there’s a new Juke outside the US now so I should add that to this list with an asterisk, but my post above is past the editing window.

It should. I mean it better. It wouldnt be a good look for them to offer that standard safety tech and not have power windows.

It saddens me to see what they are doing to the awesome vehicle that was the trailblazer. I own an 05 with the l6 vortex engine that pumps out 290 horses and has a towing weight of 6000 pounds. What the hell are you going to do with a 3 cylinder? With 137 horsepower you'll be lucky to be able to merge into the highway. What are they thinking?! What a hunk of crap. It doesn't deserve the name trailblazer.
