Lol wait, it says it’s available for MY19, yet we haven’t seen any and they’re already sell 2020's. Mazda should just give up on Diesel. It’s too expensive and a hard sell for most people unless you were VW back in the day.

No one. That’s who.

I can’t believe Mazda wasted what little resources they have on this.

Oh wow, you would never know though. None in 100 + miles of me and we have a ton of Mazda dealers around.

To be fair, the trim level is equivalent to the $37k gasser.

Bit yeah, that's a pretty small segment of buyers.

Lemme get this straight... they only sell the diesel with the higher level trim?

Works for me.  I saw an A8 TDI yesterday on the freeway and nearly had a personal crisis.

They came 6 years too late to the game for me to buy one. I wanted one when we bought our Cheap- X5 back in 2013.

There are at least three of them here according to the Mazda site.

Diesel buyers are a higher class of people. They wear Chelsea boots and pinky rings.

Yeah, the TDIs are a weird animal here.  Of course, we *cough* have a strange aversion to VAG diesels for some *cough* reason.

I see your point. I would say the same about the S-Class and 7-series though. And the X5, Q7, and and .... Basically everything that is large and younger than 20- 25 years .

Y eah, only as "Signature" which is the 8th(!) and highest trim level on the gas model.

I have a doctor friend with something like a 535d sedan, which he loves. I always thought the X5d would be compelling too.

But, overall, I don’t think BMW has sold many of the diesels either.  I honestly don’t know which of the current MB models in the US can be had with compression ignition either, though.

To be fair, Mazda has had the Skyactiv D engine since before they started branding everything with the Skyactiv name. It just took them forever to actually start offering them here. I honestly thought they gave up on bringing them over when dieselgate happened.

Maybe it’s just a token effort to say they tried and then they can cancel it with no fuss. It seems automakers do that a lot. They introduce a desirable/innovative product  without any marketing and price it too high. Then no one buys it and they can cancel it and go back to selling the same old high margin products.

they were trying to do what VW tried, certify them without having to use urea-based SCR.  To their credit, they just threw up their hands and put in the urea catalyst instead of cheating like VW.

The window for Skyactiv-D in this market closed. This is a niche vehicle that I would think a small company like Mazda would nix to focus on more profitable products.

That’s so stupid. Who is going to buy the diesel?

People who want to save money on fuel. So they aren’t going to offer it on the base trim. Makes perfect sense.

I was considering the cx5 diesel recently , and found there are a few listed on autotrader for about 32k. I don’t know if those are misleading listings with considerable hidden fees, or if these might just b e a bargain when dealerships end up stuck with them and find they don’t move.

The deal breaker for me is the mileage. It only gets 30mpg highway, which is less than a Silverado or Ram half ton diesel, and that doesn’t make any sense to me. T he new Tahoe and Suburban will be available with the same diesel as the Silverado, and should have about the same consumption. So a sleek japanese compact cuv will have the same consumption rate as a burly american full size suv. What’s up with that?

I’ d buy one if the fuel economy made it worthwhile. It only gets 30mpg highway, which is not worth the reduced hp.

I’d buy a compact diesel if the mileage was impressive, but that would have to be somewhere in the 40-45 range. As it is, my next vehicle will probably be either a gas cx5 or d iesel tahoe/suburban.

They are out there. There are 35 CX-5 diesels within 100 miles of me here in Southern California.

Kinja'd!!!

All high priced and heavily discounted. And none of them are selling. Each one on this pictured list has been siting on their respective lots for over 140 days.
