Dad with 3 kids. No two-seaters for me for at least a few more years (when my oldest can start shuttling the other 2). On the upside,
981s might drop into my price range by the time I’m ready.
Wish depreciation would work faster on the M2C - might make it happen when they drop another 10-20 grand . This one (with a tune, charge cooler, and more forgiving Dinan suspension) seems to be set up perfectly .
If, for some reason, I had to replace my M3 today, I’d probably end up in an SS or GTI/R or Type R or BRZ/86 or RS... or another E9x. They’re such a great car for the money right now.
It’s interesting - I could’ve made almost this same choice ($20k for a 10 year old E39 M5) when I bought my M3 seven years ago. No regrets. So many great memories in my car; looking forward to making more. Now,
to get my
next track day on the calendar... been too long.

I have the money for a golf r with the spectrum paint option....but it would literally be *all* of my money. And I kinda want to retire at some point. And have a small financial safety net. And eat steak and drink scotch. So I "settled" on a brightly colored FoST. Really not a bad situation to be in though.

This Jaguar S-Type R
Reasons:
-It’s a Jaguar S-Type R and I already own two other cars with notorious records of reliability (RX-8 and STI)
-I’m trying to be fiscally responsible this off-season and get some CC debt paid off with a plan to do some wholesale car changes this spring and summer.
It’s hard though. I’ve driven past and stopped to look at this car multiple times. And while its still overpriced, its been on this lot for a long time now and I’m pretty confident I could knock down the price a fair bit just to get it out of there.

Alright, so, I’m car hunting for a while now. I’ve got the funds to get a different (second-hand) car, but want (read NEEEEEED) to finish my Integra before I sell it first. I don’t want to buy a new car before finishing this one because I know how that will end (it will end in me renting a box, storing the ITR in it with the thought of working on it but in reality, it will be in storage and nothing will be done because I’m a noob like that).
The ITR is a coupe, I had removed pretty much everything in the back, from back seats to spare wheel, everything really. Now, 1 car that has always intrigued me is (are) the GT86 (twins). But, I just can’t deal with even less space than the ITR and the ITR actually has a decent amount of space now that the whole rear is empty.
I do have a whole list of candidates that make the cut though, but unfortunately, thats not what youre asking, lol.

I want it so bad...but it’ll take up the space reserved in the garage for the Tacoma, and knowing myself, I’ll never get it running and it’ll be a disaster when I try to get rid of it.

S2000. I really want a fun roadster and particularly the S2k because my first fun car was a Civic Si and I miss the high-revving Vtec motors. Silver over Red is a favorite of mine.
Reason I haven’t - space + responsibilities . Currently live in a city and only have one garage spot. Reason I love my GTI since it’s a great all around car. Also, saving for downpayment on a house, so wouldn’t be responsible to dip into that for a S2k.
Almost bought a cheap Miata earlier this year to scratch the roadster itch, but once again parking was a concern.

Here’s my current dilemma....I have so many wants when it comes to vehicles that I can’t make up my damn mind, so I buy nothing. Small and sporty, though. Z3 Coupe (I could stretch for an M, but just can’t justify the price), M roadster, BRZ/FRS. Lately I’ve also been on an 80s mid engine kick, so Fiero/MR2. And of course a 60s Mustang is always on the list.
So my reason? I can’t make up my mind. Especially for something that’s a third vehicle.
Primary vehicle I’d like... Challenger Scat Pack but my wife really dislikes them. I could see one being a forever car that would get driven. It put a huge smile on my face when I drove it, regardless of its shortcomings.

I have a couple in mind.
The first would be a rallycross beater. I can afford that. I won’t though, because my wife will be pissed, I don’t have a good place to put it, and my wife will be really pissed.
Also, I now have two friends who want me to codrive their vehicles for rallycross next year, so I really don’t need to buy my own.
The other vehicle would be a Honda Rebel 250. It would be the next evolution of for IdiotFest. We’ve now done two long scooter trips, and we really dig the slow 2-wheel life. Having something that could sustain 55mph on rural highways would be nice though. Also, I’d like to add an actual motorcycle in the fleet now.
But I won’t. While I have the cash to buy one, it would be wise to keep that cash in my pocket. I also really really love my scooter, and I want to keep modifying and personalizing it. D iverting my money and attention will take away from that.
Also ... and most importantly ... my wife would be really super extra pissed.

The advantage of the ITR is its coupe body and fully opening hatch. It adds space to load in large things and since it has nothing in the back, I can put in large stuff all the way up to the front seats. The only disadvantage would be the upper tie bar in the back, but that one is removable, so no problems there.
The twins have a ‘regular’ opening trunk and much, much less space between the back and front seats. Overall, the twins seem smaller cars compared to the ITR, from seating position to interior space.

Miata RF in Eternal Blue Mica. I can afford the vehicle, but then all of my vehicles that are drive- able are 2 seaters. I have to take my own trash to the dump and I’d hate to throw it in an RF. If I wait another year or two I can certainly afford to keep the CX-5 until the wheels fall off, and have the RF too. I’d also love to get an FD RX-7, but then again all 2 seaters. Plus all of my vehicles would be over 25 years old too.

A Regal 3/25 - probably too slow to safely drive on many of the roads I use regularly, need to use a lead additive would be annoying, concern over ease/speed of spare parts delivery, and I might be getting a company car again in the near future, which would reduce storage space.
But, I have always wanted one, and there is one for sale near me at a decent price.

I identify with many responses. I want a small roadster as a second car but here’s the problems. 1) my 2 cars would be small 2 seater sports cars (not really a problem but it feels like it should be), 2) I’m worried im not a good enough mechanic yet to keep an old car running reliably enough, and 3) I can afford it but that’s money I could spend on the Cayman!
My preference would be S2000 but a good one is too expensive. Then I’d want a Solstice GXP, but... Pontiac... and the support community isn’t as much as I’d like. So really I want a miata. And I'll probably get one. I keep searching but I just haven't fell in love enough yet to put the money on the table.

What sold me is the effortlessness of it as a total package. It’s just the easiest, safest, best transportation option out there, at least for me. Most of my driving is me solo, and me with my daughter in a car seat. She has to wait for me to open the back door, which is dumb, but a small price to pay for not having pillars between the front/back. I’m not driving big, long road trips with it. If I were, I’d still have the e60, which I could just set the cruise at 90 and cover ground like a low-flying private plane
.
The interior is GREAT. Except for the light-color seats, which will get grubby with any bit of water. I was really happy to hear that Lincoln designers had benchmarked the i3's interior; it’s just so perfectly, thoughtfully, and efficiently laid out.
I can’t stress enough how effortless (and still, all these years on: fucking rad) this car is. And that it’s as quick and unexpected as it is? I’m good with that.
And I’ve still only bought 7 gallons of gas in 2.5 years.

What my wife will allow, and how much the kids like top down driving, may change the specifics - the cars I love most generally have lap belts only in front (if even that). Can always add lap belts, of course.

The back seat of the 86 fold down, you can get a ton of stuff in there. I’ve fit 2 full sets of mounted wheels and tires in mine. I don’t think there’s much you can fit in the ITR that won’t fit in an 86 (maybe something really wide like a huge bass drum but even then I bet it’d be pretty close.
My BRZ has been my only car for the last 5 years and the only time I couldn’t fit everything in my car that I needed to was picking up my parents from the airport, they had 2 wheeled hard cased rolling suitcases that were too wide/long to both fit in the trunk (I couldn’t fold down the seats since we needed seats for 3). If I had to, we might have been able to fit everything by having people hold stuff but I just picked them up in my dad’s S class.

They really did do a great job on packaging for a car so small and light. Makes it so much more usable as a car than something like a Miata.

M2, IS-F, Mustang GT350, BRZ.
There may be a brief window in time when both kids are in front-facing seats or too small to be bothered by sitting in the back of those. Most likely I’ll be eyeballing comfort-machines like an S90 or 540i by then. Used, of course.

The opening pic is mine:
The Cayman is the closest car I’ve driving to my 86 on the track but it has some extra power and is step up in interior quality (I’ve got one car for track, autocross, and daily driving duties thanks to living in an apartment). The only reasons I’ve kept from getting one are that my BRZ is already a ton of fun and meets all my needs and the Porsche would definitely be more costly to run at the track.

I expected the RallyMetro to last maybe 8-9 months, and it was around for 2 years. My neighbors were totally cool about it, but my wife HATED how it looked in the driveway. The last summer I had it, she planted a container garden behind it, to shield the view of it as best she could.

That really is my only other option but they’re more expensive near me by a couple of thousand. Also it’s not a dealbreaker but I would love a convertible (I’m the kind of guy who would like it in the winter).

Me too. I like my tan interior, but I like the brown and black a bit more. It’s be easier to keep looking clean. that’s for sure.

And those 2 back seats add a bunch of practicality.
I could see myself owning both an 86 and a Cayman S some day (not at the same time, unless the 86 was passed on to one of my kids
). Very glad these cars exist, and in good number!

Going through this for the last few months, trying to decide on a replacement for the Touareg (which continues to run fine, but the little things are adding up.....drivers side heated seat not working, exhaust starting to get a little loud...)
Anyway, torn between getting another used SUV (ML/GLE350? ) , or a GTI. I’m a bit afraid that if I get the GTI, it will be fun enough to overshadow the 986 Boxster and relegate it to sunny-day-only duty (it’s currently driven year round, with snows for the winter).
I’m also thinking about going lower-rent on the SUV/DD and upgrading to a 981 Boxster.
So, to answer your question, it’s a 981 Boxster. Nothing wrong with the 986, I love it, and I don’t need to upgrade. But damn I spend a lot of time on AutoTrader looking at 981s....and winter is the best time to buy a convertible....and....and.....

I don’ t work right now because school has me really busy but for my second car I am considering a Suzuki Cappuccino. I currently own and drive a 1999 Pontiac Firebird TransAm but gas is expensive on it. The Cappuccino would just be my daily since it gets around 43 MPG. Also its a interest car being so small and light.

You have to use the passenger seat to get the full 2 sets, but the tire shop guys are always dumbfounded when I drop off a set of wheels and tires and then pull the new tires out of the car.
A full set of tires along with all the tools, chairs, and other track items all fit in the car and if packed correctly while still leaving the passenger seat open and in a usable position.
Whenever I have to travel to a track (4hrs to COTA or 6hrs to Houston) it is much easier to just have everything loaded in the car without a trailer, especially since once I get there I can just lock the car and leave all my stuff loaded up.

We enthusiasts really do have some great options right now.
I’m quickly exiting that window, sadly. Kids are 13, 11, and almost 7.

Yup. The shitty part of being landlocked in Austin is that anything farther than Dallas or Houston is a flight.

H ow many hours do you have?
Lexus RX300/Toyota Highlander: A cheap-ass beater for the trails , which is everything I bought my Volvo for, but I can’t justify having a third car especially when there’s one on the horizon showing up sooner than expected...
W124 E-class wagon: Already have one broken-ass Euro in my side yard waiting for parts. Don’t need another - or do I?
M235i/ M240i: CPO CPO CPO! But as much as I want one, I don’t see myself owning a BMW now given how close it pushes the limits of my finances.
Regal TourX/Golf Sportwagen : A practical choice given the massive discounts , but I’m not ready to grow up and get rid of the Miata yet.
Mazda3: See above. Also, it’s how much!?
VW Golf hatchback : I’m going to pretend this doesn’t exist and isn’t a reasonable alternative.

I have shopped for pretty much all these cars. Including the Highlander beater, but I don’t like the look of any generation of RX.
I have a 2018 Golf hatchback (manual 1.8T). It rules. I like the idea of many other cars, and I wouldn’t break the bank to buy them,
but until am like Jay Leno and can pay someone to “own” the problem of
maintaining
them, I probably won’t. That’s probably the least jalop answer ever, though. I guess I no longer have an affinity for jalopies. I am apparently the opposite of David Tracy.
Also, I saw someone on a VW forum say that the current non-GTI Golf is the modern incarnation of the W124. It is an oddly specific claim, but the idea was that the Golf is quiet and has a certain balance of comfort and handling, and it (apparently) has a similar character. The last time I was in a W124 was 15 years ago, and I wasn’t the one driving, but I can kinda see it.

Define “afford”...
If the definition is “won’t cost all the money I have in the world, and leaves enough to pay bills for at least a little bit” then the answer is probably a Cayman of some upper power-spec trim... But I won’t, because its not practical and I need to have savings for farm reasons. Living on a dirt road in the snow belt is not a reasonable place to own a Cayman.
If the definition is “won’t dramatically impact my long term savings or endanger retirement funding” then the answer is either a Suzuki Cappuccino or a Lada Niva, either of those could be highly entertaining. The Lada would be more useful, but financially speaking a lesser value than the Cappuccino. I have no extra storage, though the Suzuki is so small I could probably cram it in the garage if I pull out the built-in work benches. Neither are required, and I don’t have a lot of spare time to spend on them either... And not buying one leaves a bigger buffer for surprise farm expenses. I do think about them though.

The car I am mostly likely to buy for real is a Lemons car. Which contradicts what I just said. I guess that's pretty jalop, though.
