Southern teams are a bunch of pussies. That’ s what m y opinion is really boiling down to. For the sole reason that the majority of southern teams all have domed stadiums and the northern teams mostly have open stadiums. This runs contrary to what we might think should be the way. Open stadiums represent the play of what real football is all about. Outdoor slugfests in all weather. Kickers compensate for wind. Players change cleats for the rains or snows. Home field advantage means something and that’s part of the damn game. One-Hundred years of the NFL and we have stadiums becuase some teams don’t like to play in the rain or cold? Football is tough. Play like it is.

Minnedota, Seattle, Detroit . They have domes. Green Bay, plays outside. New England, plays outside. Chiefs, play outside and have what is about th e loudest stadium. And that’s outside. Oh yeah, The Bills! If any case was made for a stadium for “protection” against elements, Buffalo is that, but guess what? Oh my god! They play outside! Still!

No. This domed football bullshit must end. They must always play outside. Rain? Tough shit. Snow? Tough Shit. It’s not perfect weather to watch a game? Grow up and put on a coat and go to the game. Learn a lesson from Green Bay and Buffalo and learn how it’s done.

I think it’s less for the teams and more for the fans. Because you need a special amount of masochism to paint your belly and stand out in the snow.

As someone that grew up in WNY, Buffalo gives 0 fucks. State of emergency? You better believe everyone is going to show up super early to shovel out the stadium and then smash tables in the parking lot with no shirt on.

It’s coming off that you think the players decide where to play, or they decide what type of stadium their team plays in. Both are 99% innacurate. That 1% are the rare breed of player that has a little control on where to play. Otherwise, most domes were decided by the team owners. And player play-ability is one of the smaller factors when deciding between a roof or not. It all comes down to patron comfort. In the end, the owner of the franchise wants to put butts in seats, and make money. Franchises like Chicago or Green Bay have die hard fans that encourage the weather, while fans that may be a little more fair weathered (Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles next year ) need to be coaxed into attending. I would even argue an enclosed stadium has  as much as a home field advantage as an open stadium in the weather. Places like New Orleans are known for having stupid loud home games.

The Cardinals played outside for two decades  No one wants to risk heat exhaustion to watch shitty football. Well, except kid me, my dad and my grandpa.

It’s all about the product on the field and putting butts in seats. Rain/snow games tend to be less entertaining because it’s a lot of running the ball and short distance gains. Not as much fun as watching someone make a 50 yard pass. Lower scoring as well. But people in the stadium are the bigger factor.

I’ll use Atlanta as an example. We have a retractable roof. It’s only open in ideal situations because a lot of people aren’t going to go sit in 95 degree heat with 100% humidity. UGA fans do it but they’d be a lot happier under a dome. 4 years of baking in the sun and I’ve only been to one game since graduating. Why go get sunburned and risk heat exhaustion if you can watch comfortably from home or a bar. Up in colder climates you can dress to stay warm or dry. There’s little you can do about heat and humidity.

As a long suffering Bears fan, and a huge fan of Soldier Field (come at me),  I approve this message.
