I remember thinking this when t he gas station I worked at started carrying DEF. lots of big plastic jugs. I’d bet 99% don’t get properly re cycled. And as a former gas station employee I can tell you they are a PITA. Either truck drivers leave them laying near the pump, or they try to shove them in the trash. Only about 3 of them fit in your average 30 gallon diesel pump trash can. So it creates a lot more clean up work, and that if they don’t end up blowing away.

In Finland you can get this stuff (it’s AdBlue here ) from pumps placed besides the fuel pumps . Stores are of course selling it variously sized packages too.

Obviously there are ways to handle that better, but I think even if they are going in the trash, that’s better than dirty diesel exhaust. It’s much harder to keep out of contact with exhaust than garbage, and it should prevent a lot more pollution than the container’ s production creates.

We are starting to see that in the US. Makes much more sense to me.

The use of DEF is more about saving your lungs than saving “the environment”. Because the actual fluid (mostly urea) is pretty toxic to the environment in con centrated quantities . There’s been a few spills that have caused problems.

That is one aesthetically pleasing fuel pump.

Too bad it doesn't save your nose. DEF spills make you gag. It's a wonder every diesel doesn't smell like week old cat piss going down the road.

Just further proof that Diesel has always been a distant second to gas as a mainstream solution in the US. Seriously, we have band-aided the hell out of Diesel for the past 20 years (trucks and trains excepted, obviously).

We need ULSD!

The cars aren’t ready yet!

ULSD hurts truck engines!

Put this additive in there!

OK, but we need a fluid to add to the emissions system!

Here’s a box of piss!

Thanks, this is great!

And the behind the story of making that DEF container is probably on par with the amount of environmental impact it tries to reduce.

The box is made in a box or sheet plant and the jug is made at an extrusion plant. Those are both shipped separately to the Peak where the jugs are filled and then shipped again to stores.

The trash is then collected and moved to a dump site. All while using ICE vehicles to move the containers

I wonder what the real impact is because granted the semis shipping the DEF can be in the 1000s of containers but it would be interesting to sit down and calculate it out

I’ve seen some posts on JRITS of people that have filled their gas tanks up with DEF, not pretty. One ended up with a $16k repair bill.

Yikes I thought the spouts for the DEF were different enough to normal gas to not fit like diesel vs gas pumps.

I’m sorry, i don’t have a lot of sympathy for people who do that. Unless you live in the few states that don’t let you pump your own fuel, knowing how to use a pump is an integral part of driving a car.

It’s basically concentrated poison piss. Overall, it converts NOx in the exhaust into water, nitrogen gas and carbon dioxide.

My station did get a pump, because we are the only station that larger trucks can pull into in the town. It was a pain tho because DEF can freeze if the windchill gets too it. The pump had a cover for the handle but pretty regularly some one wouldn’t close it, or it wouldn’t close, and the pump would freeze.
