A 2001 Arnage Red Label for sale locally . Only 50k miles but needs a head gasket and control arm bushing. 10k is the ask. NADA sez low retail is 26k and avg ret is 34k. This fix is something I could tackle myself and have a really nice cruiser - until the next thing broke. What does the Oppoverse say?

That is a horrible idea
, but this is Oppo so you absolutely should do it
.

I dunno. Doing the work myself means there’s little downside if I decided to sell it later as a clean, running car.

If something went bad, could you resell for what you got it? Then you’re only out labor and parts for the initial fix, but you get to drive it until that next thing breaks? If you think so, then hell yeah

I think it always comes down to the history of the car and the history of the owner. At that price, it hints of destress. Owner, Car, or both?

If you can really do the work yourself, how could you NOT do it?

Is anyone actually buying 20 year old uber luxo barges for anything close to NADA? Seems like a very small pool of potential buyers. Talk them down to $8k and you can probably part it out for that much if you can’t fix it. Check the oil, if it is at all milky or contaminated with antifreeze it’s a hard pass as the bearings are probably shot, both crank and cam. If it runs and is burning a little antifreeze it may be worth your while.

Does it still run enough to do some diagnosis to be sure it’s not going to be a bigger fix than they claim? Have you checked replacement parts cost?
Depending on the answers to those I think it’s a damn fine bargain. Might be nice to drive for a year and see if you can flip it.

I think there is a guy on youtube that has one and has tackled some fixes. If I were more insane and were to buy a used English luxury car I would find a BRG Bentley Turbo R and go with that since I have always liked their looks and would keep it. People think I am nuts when they ask about my stable but the vehicles I chose are in fact quite reliable and easy to fix. I haven’t crossed into British car territory, my name is in fact Morgan so I need to have one of those at some point before I die.

I def would not buy without a thorough inspection just so I knew exactly what I was getting into.

That’s my thought. 10k is far below book so even if I put a few K into it to get it running there's little risk of being upside down. But I've been wrong about this stuff before, so...

I say LS swap :o)
It uses the GM automatic transmission, so it should be easy enough :p
