A quick timeline:

April (ish) 2019: I pulled it inoperable but running out of a guy’s yard in Indiana.

Late April, early May: I have it running and driving. It essentially acts as my daily until...

July: I realize “holy crap, this thing is a rusty pile of shit and an absolute death trap”. I list it and stop driving it.

August: it sells! The same day I bought my Cabriolet, as well.

October: the new owner has put paint on it (with a roller) and put something resembling an exhaust on it. I join a local euro car group and watch him roll the fenders with a jack handle in a parking lot. It now looks like this:

Yes, it is slammed on ebay coilovers. As it should be.

The new owner probably came to the same conclusion as me and listed it.

November: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! The fourth owner in seven months has now listed it... for two grand.

However... I’ve now found myself desiring a Mk3 Jetta. Four wheel disc brake cars are kind of hard to find, so... it might be time to make use of my intimate knowledge of this car and drop a fat lowball on it.

So the guy is putting lipstick on a pig presumably wthout addressing  any of the problems that make it the death trap you deemed it to be when you previously owned it and you want to... buy it back... ?

Part out the interior, sell the wheels, take the rear axle (disc brakes), throw it on the Golf, scrap the shell. If I can get it for like... $500

That looks way too similar to how my own Mk3 looked when I sold it - complete with damage on the driver’s side where I accidentally dropped it on my head.

And even with that brain damage, I don’t think this is one you should buy....

...who did you sell it to? It’s not an incredibly common color for these.

And yeah. I would buy it as parts to feed my Golf, not to daily

I sold it to a kid in mid-Michigan back in 2014. I don’t think you got my old one. Mine had more miles than yours and the trunk was all rust.

Had a ‘98 Wolfsburg Edition, 5-speed manual and 2.slow (although it was a torquey beast and the “sport” exhaust sounded good). Tornado Red with a black interior and a sunroof (pic for example not mine) , but the windows were manual wind-ups! Loved that car.

That is the EXACT spec mine was, down to the wheels. I think it was a different paint, no Tornado Red in 97. I'm sure you know why cranks are preferred to power windows in these cars.

Yep ... @$@%^$@@& stupid window lift system. Had a previous gen one I bought used and of course ALL the mechanisms broke.

Curiously, the Mk3 is also the only generation not known for having leaky sunroofs...
