How can they call that depressing thing “sporty”? I doubt it has any performance at all

‘Upshift Light’ as a feature...

I had an 87 stanza as my first car. Was ok. Wish I would have taken better care of it vs. my 18 year old self.

New F-body Z28 wouldn’t have been all bad, relative to the era and everything else listed . Just at the zenith of malaise, good choices weren’t as easy as today.

If I was buying then, and funds allowed (these were much more expensive then compared to modern counterparts), a W123 300D (or variants ) or W126 300SD would have topped my list

That DJI quote is amusing, too.

For the day, those cars especially with the 2.2 weren’t half bad. It’s all relative.

My dad had a Horizon then, and loved it.  Dreary compared to modern cars, but there were plenty of worse choices then.

38-62 in 10 seconds... If you ever want to know about much performance has improved, that’s it right there. There are few cars on the market today that can’t do 0-62 in that time frame.

Rolling start. Probably an addition 10-15 to get to 38.

Is that a Post-Dispatch? Maybe a Riverfront Times? I didn't notice until I saw the Jim Butler Chevrolet ad. He's the Chevy powerhouse, you know.

And no upshift light! How plebeian.

First car I ever drove was an 81 (or 82) Rabbit. Loved that car so much.

We had an 81 (or 82) Rabbit with the upshift light, or E Light as it was called. If you followed it, you were in fourth gear at about 30 mph. On the other hand, if you were flooring it (as much as you could in that car) the E light wouldn’t come on. I generally ignored it.

My mom and dad had a 79 Rabbit when I learned how to drive. 3 speed auto. I can attest it. Was. Slow.

Not gonna lie...in my Taco, I’m in 4th at 35 mph.  When I was a kid I thought it was fun to rev engines higher.  Now that I’m actually paying for the vehicle, I baby it.  Besides...a 2.7L Tacoma isn’t ever gonna win a drag race.

That Rabbit (in a four door) was the first car I drove. Back in 1982.
