I for one, totally see this happening. Ranger platform +  Mach-E drivetrain = Mustang Truck

that works - and you could have really big sequential “mustang” turn signals halfway across the tailgate

If you think about it, muscle cars/pony cars are similar in concept to electric vehicles: high power, heavy, good for straight lines.

If you’re gonna have sequential tail lights across the whole tailgate, might as well just use red Christmas lights.

To vomit now, or vomit later—that is the question

Whether ‘tis nobler to in the mind to regurgitate

The soup and cheeses of outrageous dinners

Or to take arms against a sea of horsecrap

And by opposing end them.

Yo Ford, end this madness before it hits production. I’m gonna vom.

Hahaha, I love the idea of a Cayenne pickup.

But I hate the idea of Ford throwing away over half a century’s worth of brand-building around the Mustang name to say, “Nah! We’re going to slap this on a whole different category of cars now.” I know it’s not cool to care about the #brands, but I did marketing before getting into auto writing and the Mustang has an enviable amount of cachet as a two-door, low-slung muscle/sports car. NOT as a crossover. They can make an electric Mustang, but it better be a coupe with aggressive muscle-car-like looks.

The only other people who really care about the brands are enthusiasts, and the only thing you’ll do by naming a new, completely different kind of vehicle after the thing they love is anger the hell out of a vocal chunk of them. Why piss off the people who will otherwise be your biggest Calvin-peeing-on-a-bowtie-grade defenders with such a new, important reveal? The same people telling Ford to eat turds right now would likely be like, “Hell yeah, this thing rips, let me get this for my family and SUCK IT GM AND TESLA AND EVERYBODY ! LOL DODGE IS STILL IN THE PAST, FORD RULZ !!1! ” without the unnecessary Mustang branding.

(Also, the forced Mustang-style taillights look like crap on that bulbous rear end. I’m just saying. It’s a homely blob of a car.)

“Mustang Mach-E” is also just...too long. Few, if any, would’ve taken offense if it was simply the “Mach-E.” Honda learned this lesson already with the Accord Crosstour, which wasn’t really an Accord. They dropped “Accord” from the name after the first year accordingly. Why doesn’t Ford learn from other peoples’ mistakes? Who knows.

We saw this with the Eclipse Cross—Mitsubishi is functionally dead to me if they’re going to replace cars I liked with crossovers that don’t interest me at all. Most Mitsubishi enthusiasts have written the company off at a time when it really needs support from...anyone, TBH. We saw it again with the crossover-ification of the Blazer, to a lesser degree. And yet Ford decides, “let’s do this bad idea, but WORSE.” It’s absolutely stupid.

Not convinced that Mustang is a suitable brand for Ford EV. There will certainly be an electric Ranger in the next generation, especially given that VW are heavily tied up in the development of it. However, I believe that different branding and styling for an EV range would be a mistake.

I think it looks a lot better on a pickup, but I don't know why..

Exactly! It just shows that t hey really have lost all sense of brand identity. It’s not the first time they’ve done something like this , but it just might be the worst example of brand dilution to date. Why do cars have model names at all, if not to serve as a shorthand, identifying them instantly from among the automaker’s other offerings?

The Mach-E SUV presents an identity crisis for the Mustang in a way that’s eerily similar to the whole Probe thing. Ford eventually saw the light and repented from its threat to build a FWD “Mustang”, but this time Ford seems bound and determined to disregard, contradict, and confuse the Mustang’s well-established brand identity. This mess could have been easily avoided if they had just given the SUV its own look, its own name, and allowed its awesomeness to speak for itself.

Lightning moniker would be very appropriate.
