The good:
- I’m OK - mild neck pain and a bit of a headache. Could have been so much worse. Hopefully, I’ll still feel OK tomorrow.
- Again, it could have been so much worse. I didn’t even look at the damage until I got home since the guy took off and it didn’t seem that bad. I was shocked after I got home. I had no idea the force was this great. Speed limit there was 40 mph.
- The Subaru was going to get junked next Sept (before emissions) due to Wisconsin rust. 10 months early - not a big loss at all.
- Dogs weren’t in the car.
- My nicer cars are still intact.
- I can afford this. I’ll just have to daily drive my 2011 Sienna now.
Late model white GMC pickup was probably texting. Didn’t seem like he was trying to stop. I was minding my own business stopped at a red light. The force broke the seatback ratchet setting it was at. My knit hat was thrown off my head into the back seat. I watched the guy back up, make a u-turn and take off. Couldn’t read his plates.
The bad:
- The fact he took off makes me sad/a little depressed. Kinda makes me feel like it was personal that he did this. And that there are people like this out there. A bit like the sense of violation one feels with a burglary or car break-in.
- I keep saying I have to get a dash cam. Rear too.
- Forester was fun to drive. Perfect size. Good mileage.
His bumper completely overrode mine. It makes me feel like I need to buy a pickup just to not get mangled.
Since moving to Colorado, this is the second accident in the last year and a half where I’m quietly minding my own business
sitting at a red light. WTF? Maybe it means I’m done with accidents for another 20 years?

I am stunned given that he obliterated the back of your car but you drove home immediately after and thought it didn’t look that bad?
You might be concussed....

DAMN! Glad you’re OK man! Oppo is not having good luck lately, it seems...nobody witnessed it happen? No security cameras in any nearby buildings? Hit and Run is a serious offense...

No. I figured there was no
point? He took off.
I’m not going to claim it on my insurance. I was going to donate it to NPR next year anyway.

I thought about concussion given the mild headache. Hopefully not.
I didn’t realize the extent of damage until after I got home. I didn’t even get out of the car after I got hit because the guy took off and
I didn’t think it was that big of a hit.

Maybe I am concussed. Or just my
usual bad judgement. This was a residential street so no business security cams. The houses are set way back from the road due to a green space so I doubt Nest cams would help. Not that I thought about any of at the time. Hit and run is that serious?

I’m bad at taking this advice myself, but: go get yourself checked out. That was a hard hit. The fact that your hat flew off implies that your head got whipped around pretty badly, and head/neck injuries can take a day or two to really start hurting.

Glad you're just banged up and not broken. One of the reasons I watch the tv Denver news less is how many more serious hit and runs there seem to be.

You really should get checked out by a doctor even if you aren’t feeling too bad. Some things aren’t immediately apparent, but a doctor should know what to look for (and what you should look out for going forward). Also if you did get a concussion, you probably shouldn’t trust your self-evaluation.
And if this happens again, please call the cops. You might still want to call them. I don’t know about in Colorado but here in MA you are legally required to report crashes that cause that much damage.

yeah, I hate the inconvenience of going to the doctor so I probably won’t. I didn’t lose consciousness (as far as I know
)
so a
t least it’s not a severe concussion.
Although crap, moving my neck around sounds crinkly now.

oh, didn’t know that. Maybe I should still call the cops?

I appreciate your concern. Like you though I’d tell anyone else to get checked out but I hate the inconvenience of going to the doctor so I probably won’t. Thanks. I’m in Loveland. I bet Milwaukee where I moved from
was far worse for hit and runs. People and drivers generally seem nicer out here.

If it was hard enough to do that kind of damage and break your damn SEAT, then yes! You could’ve got neck injuries out of it...
I would at least report it to the police if you didn’t already for sure. The fact you know it was a late model GMC pickup means they might be able to pick him up if it goes in for repairs somewhere. If it was new enough it might’ve even had a camera on it, in which case the police could get that data from Onstar possibly.
At a minimum, if his airbags deployed (doubtful but possible) Onstar could tell them the date and time it happened (I think Onstar phones data like that home when there is an accident with bags deployed)
, possibly and if it matches when you got hit, they’d know.

As I say, I have no idea bout your laws, but it would hurt to call the non- emergency number and ask what you should do, they probably can take a report over the phone.
I still say go to the doctor. Failing that, if your health insurance has a nurse line, or web appointments that might be a more convenient way to get a more expert opinion.

I bet you’re injured. Get checked out.
This kind of thing is why I run a dashcam - people like this should be hunted down, and publicly shamed before they have a book thrown at them.
Funny you mention Milwaukee, I was in a crash there about a year ago that I suspect would have been a hit and run had the offending vehicle not been demolished.

I was a hit and run victim, and yes it sucks. Mine is a story that I need to tell here, but thankfully the car was parked and I wasn’t in it. Actually tracked down the person. Lived a block down. Never apologized or offered to pay. Had to go to court. People can suck.
Glad you’re ok

Go to the doctor!! I was in an accident 4 years ago and they still send me 500$ a year for “medical fees”. After a 2k “pain and suffering” check. I only had to go to one appointment post ER visit. I also thought my whiplash was minor but it's something I notice every day.

This makes me think of the difference in size in my accident a couple weeks ago. My Jetta rear ended a CX9 and it walked away nearly unscathed due to their bumper being much taller than mine but mine headed to the shop needing all new sheet metal in the front and a new radiator. Probably going 10 when I hit them but the vehicle height mismatch was a problem.
Glad you're alright though, take care of yourself.

This is no bueno, but at least you’re still walking and talking. You should definitely report it to the cops, and you should really go get checked out. If you got hit hard enough to break the seat, and you feel anything less than 102% now , at the very least you are going to be hurting tomorrow. Urgent care might be less painful than an ER trip.

Gotta go to the Dr. and file police report. This will allow you to claim if you have uninsured motorist coverage. Not for the car but medical probably car too but who cares . If you don’t start this now you are screwed later. Many injuries take a while to show up. Then it is too late. Also if a witness saw it and did get a plate number you could be in a lot of trouble as well.
Not all insurance is the same but likely one uninsured motorist claim will not change your rates. To anyone that does not have uninsured motorist.... Get it.

I don’t know the area you live in, but I would definitely still notify the police. His truck must have sustained visible damage too, and maybe it’s still driving around like that? Maybe it’s not their first time? Maybe it’ll give the police probable cause to stop the person, who may have had something else to hide? Can’t hurt I’d say, and it could bring some degree of justice to the jackwagon who hit you.

I would still contact police - you can use a non-emergency line, just fill out the accident report. Just m aybe they will end up pulling over a late model white GMC with significant front end damage in the next few weeks and something might come of it.

Good lord that is a hard hit. Report it and go to the doctor. Even if they don’t find the perp your insurance should cover your medical bills, and the $1 ,200 for the rusty forester .

It really hasn’t got through to me how hard of hit that was. Insurance gave me $3K for a red light runner accident last summer and I bought the Forester back for $1K. I imagine insurance is not going to give me anything now.
