This guy is the new principal trumpet in the Chicago Symphony. The CSO is widely considered one of the greatest orchestras in the world, and to sit in that principal trumpet chair is to fill the seat held for 53 years by the incomparable Adolph Herseth, who set the standard for an entire generation of orchestral trumpet players.
This is absolutely amazing playing. The sound, the musicality, all of it, and at the end, he still has a high C that will drill a hole in your head. Gorgeous.

Is this an Orchestra, a Symphony or a big band? It’s all woodwinds and no strings. I would ask my wife but she would give me some snarky reply for my lack of knowledge.

It is a band, though it might also be considered a wind ensemble. Looks a little bit big for that. The difference is that a band will have multiple people playing a single part (like four players all playing the first clarinet part) while a wind ensemble (by definition) has just one player on each part. An orchestra generally includes strings, but the term is rather flexible.

I wish symphonies did solos on a wider range of instruments, like trumpets . It feels like there’s a lot of piano and violin compared to other instruments. And while those are great, it’s fun to see professionals showing what they can really do instead of just counting out 56 measures of rest.

A few years ago, the NY Phil did a concert where many of the principal players performed a concerto. Sadly, I can’t find it on YouTube. It was great. Thing is, most people go to the symphony particularly to hear a piano or violin solo. It sells tickets. When I was in grad school, I was a winner in a competition and got to play the first movement of the Hummel trumpet concerto with the orchestra. Somebody came up to me afterward and said, “When I saw ‘trumpet’ on the program, I didn’t know what to think. But that was really good!” So yeah, it would be nice to hear a wider range of solo instruments featured.
