When you hear a click, just return the nozz le to the pump and drive away.

It would be nice to use the click in either of my cars but both are absolutely not full when that happens. And the tanks are comically small for my commute anyways. The Miata usually shuts off at 3/4 full so around 8 or 9 gallons to an empty 12 gallon tank. Since the filler neck is vertical its easy to continue filling without overflow. The STi is a pain in the ass since it shuts off closer to full but will overflow when trying to get it to full too fast. ~16 gallon tank where I have never put in more than 14 even when its absolutely empty just because of that problem.

Oops...
In any event I guess those planned road closures won’t be a problem...

Are you sure you’ve ever had an empty tank? I have a 16 gallon tank where I’ve never put in more than 14, but my assumption is that there’s a few gallons in there when the indicators are on empty to decrease the chance you actually run out.

Isn’t it more likely that the fuel gauge just reads as empty with 2 gallons left ? How would you know without scoping the tank before filling it ? Last night my 4Runner fuel gauge read empty with a 1 mile range, and then I put 19.5 gallons in its 23 gallon tank.

Well in the Subaru I have had the gauge in the E with the fuel light on for a solid 30 or 40 miles and then the car sputtered and turned off cruise control at 75 while going up a slight grade. I immediately exited and put a gallon in (it was $1 more than the next closest station I was heading to) and then drove like 5 miles to the next station and added ~13.8 gallons. So I doubted that I still had another gallon left to spare considering how the car behaved. That is “full enough” just annoying since having an extra 20 miles of range would be nice. I have had tanks last between 250-350 miles depending on how fuel efficient I drive.
The Miata is a known issue with the NB where the filler just shuts off early, there is some fix possible but it involves replacing the entire fuel tank which I dont want to do. It has also not been proven to fix it since most people just deal with it so there is limited data. Holding the pump parallel to the direction of the car when filling helps though, otherwise it shuts off at half or less usually. My other 2001 Miata was far worse than this one though.

With the Subaru, I ran it very super empty. Like fuel light on for 30 or so miles, literally on the E for another 15 or 20 miles and then it sputtered and lost power like it was OUT so I exited and added gas. I was able to fit ~15 gallons with some top up.
The Miata when I swapped the fuel pump I got it super empty just to avoid any spillage issues. When I removed the pump I could see how little gas was actually left, well under a gallon remaining. It shut off at 10 like always when filling lol.

Not a big fan of Musk here... And I admit I find those “first person” accounts from the Space-X engineers hilarious in describing the attempts to get the original rocket off the pad out at Kwaj years ago.
Those guys were just praying that “the boss” didn’t get a wild hair to fly out there on his Gulfstream to “help the team get the rocket launched”. Somehow, they managed to convince Musk to stay in California while the hard work was being done on the ground out in the Pacific. He watched from afar and they got it done... But, apparently, it was touch-and-go as to whether the ADHD One would jet in to “help” and set the program back by months.
I find those accounts ALMOST as funny as the sub-REDDIT by the ex-software-engineers at Tesla describing the house-of-cards that is the back-end server software for a half-millions cars... a few keystrokes away from bricking at any given time

I literally laughed out loud
I have used the analogy that SpaceX is the Soviets of the Musk-Bezos space race. I will continue to use that analogy.

Well, Musk says stainless steel is more robust than all those fancy materials those “so- Called rocket scientists” at Boeing and NASA are always yammering about.
The beauty of stainless steel is that this will buff right out.

My 4th gen 4Runner always caused the pump to shut off too soon if I just rested the pump on the filler hole —holding it up a little more vertically/aimed down the tube helped. I feel you on the i ssues with the angle of the filler tube.

It was much much worse of a problem in NJ where it was full service. Trying to explain to the gas attendant how to handle my finicky car was a major hassle. And getting out to do it myself was generally very frowned upon. I did it that way anyways but it was always questionable at unknown gas stations whether or not Id get an angry person who doesnt speak any english shouting at me.

I’ve run into this in Oregon for sure. Fortunately/unfortunately, often they’re staffed so thin that the attendants are grateful if you ask/volunteer to pump your own.
