PENNDOT finally sent me a new plate. I thought a month of waiting meant they were sending me the same number. Turns out, no. So that means I can share the carnage!

Kinja'd!!!

Plan is, use aircraft stripper on the paint and remove the aluminum corrosion. Use as a decoration.

I just got my new plates for MO. The old ones are getting like that. I get to keep my old plates as well.

I think metal plates from most states will do this eventually. Instead of painted steel like in the old days, these are a film applied over the aluminum. When they’re put on the car the steel screws will scrape the film and touch the aluminum. Then, water and salt get in there and let dissimilar metals do their thing. After a while the spread of powdery white aluminum oxides will cause the film to lose its grip and peel off.

I don’t believe I’ve see one of this vintage this bad before. Usually it’s the early tri-color plates that look like this.

Ive seen a bunch peeling plates around where I live. This one had been peeling for a few years before it looked like the pic up top, with the bottom pic being after i went to town on it.

I think we still paint our plates in VT. They don’t peel, they just fade really bad.

I have never had that issue in Minnesota. Interesting.
