Going to see it tomorrow, and I don’t even like Ford.

Trust me, this movie is not a glorified commercial designed to make you go test drive an Edge.

If anything it shows Ford’s corporate bureaucracy in a somewhat poor light.

Goliath vs David.  Spoiler Alert--  Goliath wins.

It is kind of a weird modern fable— it’s not like Ford gained market share from all the publicity. GM continued to gain share for another 10 years or so. So the business objective was never really achieved.

And, was there really any doubt that a company with Ford’s resources could thump a tiny Italian company?

I’ve just never understood the nostalgia for this story. But maybe it’s me.

Plus, having known people who worked with Shelby? Wow, he makes Steve Jobs look like a Boy Scout. But the movie will make a couple of billion and we’ll be inundated with bad derivative racing movies for 10 years.

YMMV

Well it wasn’t about gaining market share, as Iacocca originally tried to sell it. It was because Enzo Ferrari pissed off Henry II. Ford knew it wouldn’t sell cars- that’s what the Shelby Mustangs were for.

You gotta hand it to Enzo, we have him to thank for the Ford GT and every Lamborghini sports car ever made.

It wasn’t even Ford, they just villainized Le o Beebe.

Yeah, but even that part of the story never has made any sense has it? They get all the way to the final signing ceremony CEO-to-CEO, and it’s “a surprise” that Ferrari didn’t want to sell his beloved racing operation?

As a former Corporate Development VP of Business Development, once you get both CEOs in the room to finalize a merger — well, you fucking better have all the details completely understood. “Big Surprises” like that don’t happen in the real world. I’ve never bought that part of the “Ferrari disrespected Ford Story” either, because misunderstandings that big simply don’t happen in the real world.

I’m not a Ferrari guy, BTW. I just d0n’t buy the “Ferrari as villain” thing.

But, I don’t buy this guy doing a bad Texas accent either. But, hey, I’m surrounded by Hollywood types here in Santa Barbara and I hate what they do (usually) to biopics and modern history.

The only person from Ford that is shown in a 100 % good light is Lee Iacocca.

They made Henry II out as a complete and total pushover, Beebe a total and complete douche bag, McNamara completely worthless, and Iacocca was just a cool dude bro who was totally on board but had little to no say in anything. So probably completely accurate.

There was just so much that wasn’t in the movie, too. They made it look like Shelby was in charge of the Le Mans program from day 1, the GT40 race car just showed up off a plane one night, there was no information about how Shelby was working for Ford by 1966 racing and modifying Mustangs, and they made it out like winning the race was entirely dependent on Ken Miles driving the car. It also looked like they won the race on their second try. There wasn’t any information on the other GT40 team drivers.

The movie was  about Shelby and Miles, that’s pretty much it. I still enjoyed the hell out of it though.

There’s nothing more American than simultaneously having vastly more resources than your opponent but also thinking of  yourself as the underdog. So it fits.

My Brit car friends are also pissed that all the UK work on the GT40 chassis was glossed over...

Well that would have been a few years of failure before Shelby took the program over , fixed the car the Brits made and won the race 4 times in a row but yeah, they left a lot of the infamous British engineering story out.

Well, that’s Shelby’s version of it anyway...

Which is why they have such strong feelings about the “Shelby Mythology” over there.

The story I heard was that Shelby modified the aerodynamics and put in the 427 engine, to fix the lift the car had on the straight and because the smaller motor Lola used wasn’t very reliable. Which isn’t hard to believe since the first few iterations of the GT40 broke down. The movie made it look like the GT40 just showed up off a plane from nowhere (as if Ford designed it) and Shelby started working on it from day 1.
