Namely not selling the Fusion/Monedo Estate in the US. If i ouod have had one of these with a manual transmission i would have bought one. Hell I would have bought a new one in 2013.

Look, each body style and powertrain combination has to be independently certified for fuel economy/emissions and safety. Once you account for the cost of the prototypes ($250-300,000 each) and the testing itself, that’s easily into the millions of dollars. All that so they can lose money selling at best a hundred of these things a month? If the Fusion sedan is a hard business case to justify at 100-150,000 units a year, a manual Fusion wagon at 8-12,000 a year would be a financial disaster.

and let’s be honest, they know darn well that when an Internet Person says “I totally would buy/would have bought one” they can safely say “yeah, right.”

here’s an example- the Buick Regal (nameplate in total) sells at a rate of about 1,000 per month. GM doesn’t break out TourX separately, but I feel pretty confident that TourX is probably about 10-15% of that. I’d wager GM loses a few thousand dollars on every one they sell.

That’s because Enthusiasts don’t buy new cars in large numbers. Look at the Roadkill duo of Frieberger and Dulc ich, they don’t drive new cars, when they do they hate them. These are the role models for the internet enthusiast.

“Matter” is all relative. I’m sure at least one car company would like to be all things to all people, but IIRC all of them are at least in part publicly held and the people they answer to don’t like money-losing ventures.

if you have niche interests, then sadly you’re going to have to put up with either being under-served or paying premium prices for what you want.

but the important thing is that if you demand they make something, you need to buy it if they do. The 86/BRZ was catering to enthusiasts and I think Toyota and Subaru were hoping it would sell far better than it did.

The only way that would’ve worked here is if they gave it body cladding and raised it a few inches and made it a Outback competitor. But then that wouldn’t have made sense as it would’ve competed with the Escape while making way more sense.

I would have loved that car too, but in reality, it would have sold about 50 cars and they would stop selling it in a year.

The only wagons that sells in the US have a Subaru badge on them and Subaru has a special type of fan than doesn’t translate to other brands.

But it’ s a story you know, Americans don’t like wagons or hatches, at least not the new car buying public.

I bet it’s 10% tops. I’ve read that the MB E wagon is 4- 5% of E sales volume. If course, it comes at a premium, so I suspect they still turn a profit.

I know how model years work, but due to a number of reasons, mainly the closure of the Genk plant and relocation of the production line to Valencia, the european Mondeo (that means Liftback and Wagon) did not enter production until October 2014. Calender year 2014 that is.
