The Snuze household is in desperate need of a tech refresh . My faithful Lenovo ThinkPad from 2012 gave up the ghost the other week and now I’m stuck alternating between my 2007 MacBook (has MatLab for grad school) and my wife’s 2010 Acer. We also have a 2011 iPad that barely holds a battery charge.

I know what I need in a laptop, but I am thinking of getting the Mrs. a new computer for Christmas. She likes using the iPad and only pulls her laptop out if has to, so I’m thinking about a 2-in-1 machine to replace both . Basically it needs to have Windows (she doesn’t like change), be able to run MS Office and browse the internet, and I want something that’s at least a little above “base spec” so it will continue to function after rounds of updates, security fixes, etc. I’d like to be around the $500 but there’s some wiggle room there.

I’m thinking something like this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’ve also seen the Asus VivoBook 14" and Dell has the Inspiron 12" which is smaller but also closer to the $400 mark.

Thoughts? Recommendations ? Things to avoid? Am I asking for too much?

How about a Chromebook? Cheap, powerful and can install MSOffice products.

I’ll have to look into those a little more, but I think she’d prefer W indows which is why I’m leaning in that direction.

If you’re ok buying gently used you can get a fairly high spec Thinkpad  convertible  inside of your budget

Very much decide on what you really like in a notebook. The keyboards have all gone to super flat lifeless keys except for a very few, Dells XPS, lenovos X1 carbons, and the $$ Razer. Apple crapped on their keyboards so your lovely MacBook will not type the same at all.

How about a Surface? You don’t have to shoot for the newest model to still get decent specs and also have the “two-fer” feel.

Anything BUT a ChromeBook. There’s so many limitations, lack of Windows, lack of being able to print to a damn wired printer (dealbreaker). Really, any laptop in the ~$300 price range will be fine for what you need; I’d recommend a Lenovo convertible.

Please note, for the rare times I use a real laptop, I’m still chugging away on a 2011ish MacBook, soooo

I have HP’s pro line Elitebook with an AMD quad core that works well for business use. T he matt e non-touch screen LCD is lackluster but I use it docked to a 27" 95% of the time, so that’s not much of an issue. Everything else is quite good.

I’ve heard the 2-in-1s are a little lacking,e because the chassis is so thin, cooling is somewhat limited and therefore the performance is sacrificed.

Aready said here, the MS Surface line gets good praise, you might consider one of those.

Maybe find a deal on a surface pro 6 now that the 7 is out. The keyboard comes off which I think would be a better tablet experience than one where it doesn’t.
