What could we add to make this even scarier (short of freezing precipitation)?

Water-logged road - check!

Limited visibility: dark, rain, trees - check!

Ridiculously curvy road - check!

High liklihood of cervidae in roadway - check!

L ightning, lightning, very, very frightening - check!

Riding in the passenger seat with a terrible Camry driver - check!

The horror!

So in the situation in the picture above, would adding AWD make the Camry significantly safer?

With bald tires and a driver busy texting, yes. At least a little.

What’s the European equivalent of the car that everyone buys every 5-7 years without even comparison shopping? I used to say Ford Mondeo, but it’s probably a small crossover now. Qashqai?

Maybe if it was snowing around the corner?  Looks like they’ve got most other weather covered

Likely not. Maybe in half of 1% of situations like these.

If they end up hydroplaning off the road, they’ll more likely be able to get going again from the soft shoulder...

All this is really going to achieve is raising the average price of cars. It’s hard enough to find an RWD or FWD variant of cars as is - people tend to overbuy for their use case and needs.

Ju st think though we are possibly one step away from a manual AWD A ccord.

Nissan started it and Toyota followed suit. Honda will follow eventually (probably 2022 when the new model comes out)

But probably a pipe dream, as they all will be matched up to CVTs. Cept maybe if Toyota keeps the v6

Not an accurate picture..no Toyota would have it’s headlights on in this situation, at least where I live

Certainly not the Mondeo, never has been either. It’s the VW Golf. It has been the Golf continuously since the 80s. Qashqai would be my second pick though, but it does not have the history the Golf has.

Non-car people still think VWs are at the top of the class of reliability. “I just want a reliable car. My budget allows for a 2012 VW with TSI and DSG. Is this a good pick?” Topics like that are posted almost daily on car websites for non-enthusiasts.

I know you’re a VW owner as well, but your Passat is from a far better era from a EU market VW perspective.

Probably not an Accord, but maybe if the offer it on the Si?

“ Honda sold 30 percent more manual transmission-equipped cars in 2018 than in 2017 for a total of 45,601 cars. Making that number even more impressive is the fact that the Honda brand’s total sales for the year went down by 2.2 percent.

But when you compare the percentage of manual cars to automatic ones, things look depressing. The Honda brand sold a total of 1,604,828 cars, so manual car sales made up just 2.8 percent of Honda’s total sales”

Mine is a 2001.5, back when Herr Dr. Piech was trying to emulate Mercedes. It’s not holding up great, but you can only fight brittle plastics and disintegrating interiors for so long...plus oil consumption, several coolant leaks, etc. Some cars just become uneconomical to maintain at the necessary level.

I’m actually looking at a new AWD Golf Variant (aka Golf Sportwagen Alltrack) with the 1.8t and DSG at the moment. They’re just sitting on dealer lots from 2019 and starting to offer great discounts. Also, for the US this is the last year of the full 7-year warranty before VW goes back to a simple 3-year warranty. Which is a HUGE benefit to anyone who fears reliability.

Interesting to see that a Golf today has comparable interior space to a Passat/A4 from 20 years ago. Typical model bloat, but they’ve done a good job trimming some of the weight in the last couple generations.

Nonetheless, if we had the European Passat here, that would be m y top choice.

Maybe since Honda refuses to make the Si in auto.

And with the Hatchback coming to the US (Ohio or Indiana) in 2022, a redesign should be out, so maybe something 2021?

And I’d bet that’s the top manual percentage for any of the major manufacturer though

The Camry buyers of the world need as much safety, durability, and a  heavy sprinkling of idiot lights to keep them between the ditches.

What is it with Toyolex products and not having lights on when needed?  It may just be via so many sales in my area, but it seems every car out just after sunset on a rainy night with no lights is a Toyolex, including modern models with auto lights - sometimes the derp behind the wheel has even switched off the DRLs.  These people should not be driving.

It’s missing a flying cow.

Also, the average buyer of these cars will totally fall for it.

I can see half going for it, and the other half getting the basest of base Camrys with zero options.

Exactly. I don’t know if the automatic lights don’t register until it’s very dark (my old 08 Altima did this and annoyed me to no end) or if it’s just incompetence. On the manual lights I think people just think their dash being lit = lights on.

Yesterday we had our first snow storm and naturally there were plenty of silver Rav4's driving through the blizzard with no lights, could hardly see them.

Constantly lit instrument displays are a design flaw in my opinion, as you say, they are misleading. No doubt that’s part of it, but when DRLs are de-selected and auto lights aren’t on, the dope behind the wheel is part of it too.

RAV4s and Highlanders are effectively AWD Corollas and Camrys already, attracting the same semi-sentient motorists.
