This brought back a me mory.
In the late 1980s, we were living in U pstate New York. One day, we came across a poster advertising a concert by The Band to be held on Saturday in a small auditorium near Utica, NY . We couldn’t find any other information about the concert and there were no other posters that we could find.
That Saturday, we were near the auditorium, and stopped to investigate. The small sign outside indicated that T he Band would be playing and the admission was ridiculously cheap ($5.00 ?). We purchased tickets and went in. There were no more than 50 people in the room, and maybe as few as 30.
Right on time, The Band walked out on the stage - Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel. Robbie Robertson was not there, but two other guitar players filled in. They played a lot of their older songs (The Weight, The Shape I’m In, Ophelia, etc.) along with some songs that I had ne ver heard. In fact, I don’t believe that I have ever heard most of these songs again.
We never figured out why The Band played so unadvertised in such a small venue. Maybe they were trying out new songs. Despite the reason, we had a great time.
