I’m of the opinion that push buttons are way better than traditional auto shifters (not as good column shifters though), but damn that’s a lazy implementation.

This in the Fiat?

Yup and yup. Not sure why they decided on push button for the electric version, but Italians are weird

I don’t own an Edsel, but I have a ‘59 Lincoln that shares part of the same steering column, so if I had an Edsel donor I could convert it. As it is, just a big ludicrously oversized column for no reason. :D

So odd. Makes me love it even more. I’d 100% rock a 500e if I could make it work space-wise.

Came along on the Edsel two years after mopar, ‘tis true. Mopar just weren’t silly enough to make electromechanical steering wheel versions.

I particularly like the GMC implementation - Push for P, N, L and pull toggles for R & D, which makes it difficult to accidentally select the wrong gear.

Its certainly small, but if you only use the front seats and fold the back down, there is a surprising amount of room the back. I don’t think I’ll ever really have the backs up

How much 50s styling does your car have?

...well it has fins on the dash.

Wow

I really like the one on Lincoln’s and some high end Fords (that sounds a bit redundant)

Kinja'd!!!

It’s right where it needs to be, and frees up all the space down on the console. It’d be even better if it was accompanied by a full bench seat.

Will a push button transmission still do neutral drops?

Being electric, pretty much any time you hit the ‘gas’ pedal with any force, it’s basically a neutral drop. Gotta love that instant torque

2018+ GMC Terrain. A lot of auto journalists complained about it, but I fail to see any problems. It takes up very little space and frees the whole center console up for other stuff (more storage, decent cup holders, wireless charg ing pad, e tc.). It’s also pretty intuitive and prevents issues like were seen with the FCA knob style selector.

Nifty, I dig it. This one on the fiat requires you to hold down the gear you want for a couple seconds before it will actually shift. I guess that’s their way of avoiding bumps

I’m under the impression that Chrysler engineers built this from Bosch parts (some of which Bosch bought from GKN, IIRC), without much Fiat involvement (it's even built in a Mexican Chrysler plant, IIRC)?

The Fiat one looks... less than ideal for a variety of reasons.  But I bet it was cheap to implement, and the “hold down for a few seconds” strikes me as someone at least considering the possibility of accidental bumps.

I wouldn’t be surprised. I haven’t looked to much into it, but I know for sure the motor is B osch

At least the Italian engineers thought of some semblance of safety before trying to leave his shift early lol

Lots of pushbutton gears out there, but they tend to be on buses and the like:

Kinja'd!!!

Also, it’s not just the electrified 500 that has buttons. Here’s an Abarth with the Dualogic unit:

Huh, I've never seen that. All the autos I've seen had a traditional lever

That’s the Dualogic automated manual, sold everywhere except North America. Usually they have a lever, like this. I’ve driven one a few years ago. Despite the negativity you hear about automated manuals, it was fine.

That sounds like a blast, are the electric nannies too obtrusive? Never hunting for a gear must be choice

Its a hoot. And you can turn off the traction control for all the chirping. Between the low center of gravity, short wheel base, and crap tons of instant torque, it is wayyyyy more fun than I thought it would be
