The new fresh hell from the IS team - Premiere Pro project files are no verboten as they “contain sensitive information” (which they don’t, they are specifically referring to patient information or company information). Want to know what 99% of my job is? working with Premiere pro files. My solution is to change .prproj extensions to .jpg, then move them as needed, then change them back. Its like being back in college when I had to change files to .notexe to be able to download at the computer lab.
On the plus side. The internet speeds are rightous.

Yep, fun! I have an application that sends email reports where the emails are sometimes getting blocked because they say the attached spreadsheet contains sensitive taxpayer ID info (it does not). It’s not really used anymore, so I’m just going to shut it down rather than deal with the bureaucracy to get their scanner fixed or at least get my app white- listed .

I’m not saying you should switch, but Doug has built an empire using an old copy of iMovie.

Open a trouble ticket.
Attach the email or whatever other medium this ban on Premier Pro files was delivered in to the trouble ticket.
In the description of the problem, write, “99% of my job involves working with Premier Pro files. How am I supposed to work with these files if they are forbidden?”
Submit trouble ticket.
Wait for deskside support agent to appear like this:

We went through a variety of options when zip files were identified as potential payload carriers. I played the rename game for a while before IT finally allowed any zip file through as long as it had the company initials at the beginning of the file name. Any other zip file is immediately rejected.

IT: Why are your photo files so big?

You have no idea how real this is.
They made us buy macs because quicktime was no longer supported by apple therefor not supported by them and all our camera’s shot in quicktime. We shoot about 4 tb every 6 months and we have to justify buying hard drives EVERY FREAKING TIME. We also have to justify having USB ports that can write to them every year. They still call us up every now and again and tell us we are on their shit list and to fix stuff we’ve gotten dozen of exemptions for in the past.

Yeah, my workplace blacklisted video file extensions from our network drive as they “take up too much space.” So now there are a bunch of “ .txt” files taking up too much space.

I love that. would even better if the extensions were .notvideo

I work at a company that handles financial data and (a little) health care data. They don’t have problems like that because they don’t even have a security department.
Or a security person.
Or standard security practices people follow to keep things safe .
Or employees who can manage not to accidentally email internal admin passwords to random customers .

In the archives, our 1.5 million (or so) photo collection is slowly, but steadily being digitized into high- resolution scans that end up as .tif files around 50-60 mb per image, sometimes larger . I think we’re around 600,000 images digitized so far. Fortunately we still get to maintain a standalone IT department within the library separate from the rest of the universities IT operation.
