I’m as old as me and I still work. Twenty four more years until I can retire!

I am also as old as me, but frankly I don’t work very well these days.

Hell, I’ve been longing for retirement since I started my first job 36 years ago. Twenty four more and I can possibly think about maybe considering retirement!

I know a lot of people don’t like the switch, but this is one reason I’m happy that the US has largely gone from defined benefit pensions to defined contribution retirement plans. There’s a question as to whether those contributions are enough (spoiler: they aren’t at my current employer), but at least that money is mine, as opposed to trusting that my employers will still be around in 40 years, or that if they aren’t, our badly structured pension insurance program would still be solvent and able to pay out at the full amount.

Even for Social Security, which is our “safety-net” pension, they are going to need reforms (removing the payroll tax cap would be a good start) to keep the program solvent.

Well if you outlive your savings, you can take part in the time honored tradition of taking advantage of the fact young people are bad about voting to vote in higher taxes for them and more benefits for you (though I guess you’d vote in the UK, so maybe that doesn’t help you).

Yeah, do they let non-citizens vote?

There’s talk of raising the here as well, but it’s of course hard because while many people, especially in white-collar jobs can and do work longer than they did when the program was created, there’s a lot of people who wouldn’t physically be able to do their job at their age. Better to have the rich pay their full share of the tax (Social Security in the US has a regressive tax structure, though progressive benefit payouts) .
