!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

On one hand this sounds really really cool, especially if it includes Toyota’s D4S tech. On the other hand if this is meant to REPLACE the 4-door STi then I think its a really terrible move...anyone re member  when they got rid of the hatches?

This is a bad idea.

This could end up as something like RAV4 Hydrid WRX STI. STI brings non-functional hood scoop and WRX means that it has gold colored wheels.

No way will the go to just a 2 door. The 4 door WRX, and STIs are some of the best selling enthusiast cars under 50k

If it means a standalone product I’m all for it.

My dream would be that it’s being done to allow for a Subaru entry into WRC. Personally I like small cars with hatches so I’d be all for it, but I understand that there is a lot of people now used to the bigger 4 door varieties who would suddenly be left without something they could use.

If I suddenly woke up as the head of Subaru I’d be making the Yaris based one as the Justy WRC. The WRX could stay a 4 door in it’s current size, and would be available with a hatch and a lift as the Crosstrek XT. The Legacy/Outback and Ascent would remain as is, except with the addition of a ‘Brighton’ trim line that stripped things down, lowered weight, and came with a manual.

The chance of me waking up as head of Subaru is 0%

The STI has always been the go fast version of the Impreza. It should stay that way.

Can Toyota please stop getting in bed with everyone to build performance cars?

I guess my main question would be who is doing what parts. I think ideally Toyota develop the engine (because I think boxers are old and overcomplicated nonsense), maybe with subaru developing the turbo/power add ons. Subaru seem to have the remainder of the driveline down, so have them do the trans and AWD components. Then probably Subaru do the body, and toyota make a slightly badge engineered front end.

I feel like this is something people said about them possibly removing the hatch...lol

It’s kind of hard to complain when the result is more performance cars.  Toyota’s previous plan was using no help to build performance cars, and just have no performance cars.

It could stay that way. The STi would still compete in american rallys and whatever this would be could be the homologated version of a potential WRC car and thejustache suggested.

The WRX already looks like a carolla with a hood scoop, how could they make it worse? A 2.5 L inline 4 with a big turbo would be an improvement .

Working with Toyota on a new STI clearly states that the rumor mill thinks the replacement for the current STI is not going to be a full Subaru design.

Unless the replacement for the current Impreza isn’t a full Subaru design either.

The Impreza and Corolla are both based on their respective manufacturers global platforms. I don’t see either company deciding to outsource the next generation of either car when the platform to underpin that new generation already exists.

So it could maybe be an entirely new platform?

That’s exactly what it sounds like which makes it wrong in my mind to call it a WRX STI.

Fair point. Though it makes me feel we’ll live in a future where a performance car is impossible unless two or more automakers go in on it.

Eventually one automaker will realize that not everyone wants a “The perfect sportscar!”, and that just a mediocre version of an interesting car is great if the price is right.

I have a theory.

The only reason for a new two door STI would be that Toyota would also have a car run I a RWD set up on the same classis I think this new STI could replace the BRZ and be the next GT86.aybe Toyota would also sell an AWD version as an Alltrack or GT4.

And please Toyota get ride of the GT86 name and call it a Celica!

If it’s more reliable that would be good but I’d rather have the 4 door or the old hatch body styles . Also this would make sense as Toyota owns part of Subaru already.

Given Toyota’s recent collab. history , I basically read this headline as “Toyota will rebadge next gen Subaru WRX STi”

It’s always puzzled me  how those conversations get started. How does an automaker just call up their competition out of the blue and offer a collaboration project without getting shot down with a “LOL go build your own car, loser”?
