Now, what cooler than being cool?
Ice cold!
I can’t hear ya! I say what’s, what’s cooler than being cool?
Ice cold!
No, I’m sorry, the answer we were looking for is liquid nitrogen.

If the melting point of nitrogen is -210C and the boiling point is -195c (give or take a few decimals,) why is solid/frozen nitrogen not more common? is it that much more difficult to chill the additional 15C, or is it less useful in solid form?

The only thing I’ve seen it used for is in Real Genius where they talk about using it to cut coins for the vending machine, although that can’t really be solid N2, it must be dry ice, perhaps in a liquid N2 cooled thermos.
It is used for some things , I’ve read, but I’m guessing that for most applications, because of the closeness of the phase transition temperatures, liquid N2 is just as good. As o ne of my chem profs put it, “liquid nitrogen is cheaper than bread.”

But I don’t have any, and neither does anyone else at work, so I’m still the coolest around.

Have you made ice cream yet?
Fill container with cream and flavoring of choice, pour in LN while stirring like crazy (and wearing protective gear -it spatters).
Makes the best ice cream ever - the faster it freezes the smaller the crystals, and this is the fastest freeze you can get, so it comes out super smooth. Plus the trapped gas gives it a slightly foamy texture.
Fantastic party trick if you can get away with taking a thermos of LN home

I actually can, and I have the thermos. Thanks for the tip!
