I’m just about with you... Deads
pin was far more than a sports sit
e. It had many a fine political article as well. became splinter Jr after splinter was canned after gawker was canned. Paul told the people at deadspin to cuit it out, ‘stick t
o sports’ -they told him to fuck off, quit. Now he quit

Deadspin was a sports site
Deadspin ran out of ideas
Deadspin started doing random editorials
Random editorials then defined Deadspin
New owners suddenly wanted Old Deadspin
Writers flipped out
I still think giving them a new blog for all the non-sports stuff would have been just fine. I have no idea why it came to this. It’s like watching my 6-year-old fight with her classmates.

“It is the right moment for me to leave to pursue an entrepreneurial opportunity”
Google Translation:
“My boss is getting personally lambasted and blames me due to my handling of recent events, largely because there is no one left working here to blame. Now I am being forced out but no one will hire me, so I’m going to go work for myself. Please note that I left on cordial terms and would very much appreciate a recommendation letter in the future, because I expect to starve... or at least be forced to sell the Aspen house ”

GO media sold ad space to a certain insurance company (Bum ba-dum bum bum bum), and when clicks didn’t meet expectations they switched to autoplay ads.
Autoplay ads were universally loathed
Deadspin posted an article that basically said: “You hate the ads, we hate the ads. Here’s the boss’ contact info, spam him and tell him how much you hate the ads”.
Said article was shared to various G/O sites
Said article was very quickly un shared by upper management
Deadspin editor Barry called out management for violating the union contract
Upper management called Barry on the carpet (metaphorically) and told Deadspin to stay in their lane, and I’m quoting: “stick to sports”.
That went over as well as can be expected, and DS spent a day posting everything but sports (they also started comparing Paul to “herbs”, which I don’t get. but whatevs.)
Upper management called Barry on the carpet again, and yeeted him out of his position so fast I’m pretty sure he stole Felix Baumgartner’s record
Deadspin staff resigned in protest.
We showed up Monday morning and saw:
on various pages, and the user base started pulling the eject handle. GO has since backed off to “reevaluate” their options vis a vis Kinja user pages, but we’re all still anticipating a shut-down of everything beyond the main pages (Jalop, Giz, Onion, etc.).

The in famous blog called Spanfeller, the CEO, a herb (look at Google’s suggested search terms) , not Maidment, the editorial director. Otherwise, this is all correct.
Allow UrbanDictionary to help you with the herb thing:

The Old Deadspin you talked about never really existed. Maybe you could make a case going back to the Leitch days a dozen years ago, but even then it was clearly not a mainstream sports site. And non-sports articles were firmly established a decade ago during AJ’s reign. Non-sports is nothing new for Deadspin.
I don’t know what the new guys want, but it’s definitely not any form of Deadspin.

This take is wildly wrong—you’re kidding yourself if you think the new owners wanted Old Deadspin. Deadspin was never only a sports site, or at least, it always cast a critical eye toward the politics, business, and media that surrounds sports, and it always posted random stuff like unexplained ranked lists and people and/or pigs shitting themselves. Deadspin actually became less random and irreverent in recent years—less shitposting (still some, of course) and more serious investigative reporting of sports team owners. Go look back a few years under the tags for “life’s rich pageant” and “underexplained lists” if you don’t believe me. New owners wanted a Deadspin that never existed--it seems like they didn’t mind the shitposting but didn’t want the social, political, and most importantly, media criticism. Deadspin without that would not be Deadspin. And now it isn’t.

Hopefully that’s all (relatively) accurate, and aside from Crosstalk getting 404'ed, I haven’t missed anything important. I missed the whole Not-Deadspin side blog thing so I deliberately left it off.

They want ESPN which is a horrible idea since I’m pretty sure ESPN is in the toilet right now.

I don’t get the feeling they want to pay even as well as ESPN pays non-”Talent” though.
Also pretty funny in the sense that Will founded Deadspin to cover the things that ESPN wouldn’t.

Check RPM’s addendum too. I crossed up who was being called an herb, and why (sign you’re getting old # 5151: the internet slang you do know is older than most of the people who are using newer slang...)
