Not sure if I’m just making up my own narrative to align with my own feelings but it looks like the comments on front page posts are way down since last weeks “happenings”.
While we continue to stay on Kinja, or more succinctly, continue to be hosted by the owners of Kinja, we need them to stay in business if only to continue to host personal Kinja sites.
G/O Media gets paid by advertisement revenue and that is proportionate to how many views and clicks the FP’s gets. In this model, just like YouTube content or network TV, you entice clicks and page views by giving your audience what they want. Most of us don’t want content mill, clickbait, auto play videos, pop ups etc etc. We want the community we had. The trick for G/O is to figure out how to monetize what we have without fucking it up.
In the mean time, I want a a cause and effect because that is the only thing that will make “the company” pay attention; their decision equals lower value.

I have been avoiding it as well. Hopefully their ad revenue plummets

I’m not actively avoiding it, but there’s no question I’m visiting less because with Splinter and Deadspin dead, there’s less interesting stuff on my dashboard, so I’m not checking there as often.

I'm visiting less organically. I'm finding less and less interesting content with less and less frequency. if I'm 100% honest I'm still holding a minor grudge as well over some bad handling of some freelance work if mine.

I'm avoiding Deadspin now. I used to read Deadspin as frequently as Jalopnik and really enjoyed some of their former writers. I still read Jalopnik, but only for the writers like Tracy and Torch. I've been getting more cars news from other sources and reading more TTAC.

It’s tough, I’d love to send a “fuck you” to G/O in any and every way possible, but I also want to support the writers and staff of the FP who are good people working their asses off and
getting screwed even harder than we are.

I consider Deadspin dead. It’s clear that whatever they want it to be is not the site I enjoyed, so I unfollowed it and have left it alone. Hopefully they won’t keep up leaving it as an embarrassing shell of its former self for too long.

I'm genuinely curious what role the union has played in all of this

They do see to be intransigent but we don’t know the whole story on either side. If you look at comments in blogs outside of the Kinja bubble, commenters seem to be split.

Fp has been clickbait garbage for awhile now. I dont blame staff, they got bills to pay.

FP was dead to me some time ago. Deadspin is now, well, dead too. So surprised private equity ghouls are involved with this.

I’ve been there less and less in the past months.. not much interest if I’m honest.
I’ll be sad if Oppo goes, but the lifeboat already seems like fun.

I know a number of the Jalopnik staff personally and have worked with them over the years. They’re good people, Patrick has personally saved Oppo from the chopping block a number of times. They won’t roll over and I’ll gladly go to battle alongside any of them.

This exactly. Patrick George getting paychecks is worth the FP visits. That Oppo had persisted through the recent transitions is due to him

I usually only go to the FP for reviews. There has been some really good long form stuff, but it’s fewer and further between. I usually go to Driving.ca now, as I'm preferring Canadian content.

So for any given writer over there, what percentage of their income comes from that gig? Are they employed full time?

There are a few weekenders, part timers, and freelancers, but the vast majority of the writers are full time staff.
